Oh man, I wanted to add something, but I forgot, and then I re-read the strip hoping to jog my memory, and it didn’t. And of course as soon as I hit Post, I remembered.
Several years ago, our handyman was doing some work in the basement, making it into a finished room. And one afternoon he brought his dog with him, planning on closing the basement door to keep him down there and away from our cat… but one of his trips, he forgot.
Next thing he knows, Larry sees his 80lb dog in the prime of his life cowering in the corner, with our aging, declawed 10lb cat staring him down.
The following summer, we’re visiting a store that has several yard signs with “Beware of _____” with a cutout of the animal in question (dog, cat, bird, etc.). Except somebody had had some fun with the signs, having realized how easily the “Beware of ____” part could be removed… and switched them all around.
…We saw a “Beware of cat” with a cringing dog… and just had to buy it for Larry. *g*
So cute. Elvis not puffy but Lupin is, that is different. Beatrix does get around and having an extra tea bag is too funny. Love the dogs heart nose. Such attention to detail. Is he based on a real dog?
They do have an entry on the page that lists the characters, but alas, they do not have their own about page yet. I think only Elivs, Puck, Lupin, Tommy, Tabitha, and Sir Figaro do right now.
I swear, I heard Puck’s tail go “PUFF”. And it looks like the intern can teach the veterans a thing or two about other kinds of four-legged furry creatures. 🙂
Me too, it was like when Wolverine’s claws go SNICKT in the comics, it was like POOF! And Bea is adorable on top of the dog’s head. I’m glad there’s a dog and he’s not chasing the cats against their wills.
Little Beatrix on the dog’s head has got to be the most adorable thing you have ever drawn. And I know you’ve said differently, but in my head, Beatrix is a Coon Kitten.
Yayyy! Thought I’d give BCN one more try before bed and I was NOT disappointed – in more ways than one. I hope our goggie friend will become a semi-regular part of BCN? His face in the 3rd last panel looks so kind and sweet, and I LOVE Beatrix peering over top of his head to talk to him! She’s definitely one busy kitten – though I wonder how she got outside when the Boys aren’t able to.
Elvis and Puck in panel 5! ❤❤❤
Elvis’ comment on dogs not liking Frisbees – I guess that’s why they catch and bite them!
And shape-shifting dogs – only you would write with such insight, Georgia. 🙂
There must be a way out from the laundry room as we’ve seen Burt in there and that’s where his video link up is. I expect the boys avoid outside after Elvis’s misadventure in the snow.
You’re probably right that being outdoors isn’t high on the Boys’ list. Georgia will no doubt enlighten us on Beatrix getting in and out as this continues.
That was the voice I heard when I read it.
I hear Beatrix as one of the peppy, bubbly high school cheerleader interns. 8^)
I’ve worked with several people like that,
all of them good people.
It looks like a flat cap to me. I’ve lived in Scotland for twenty years and never seen anyone wearing a tam, anyway. You see flat caps around occasionally in Scotland and England, usually on older men. Though my partner has one and he’s thirty-five.
He could be a guid Scots dog! Tommy, on the other hand, could only be American.
This is as adorable as ever, and I’m loving Beatrix’s huge paws.
I love that a dog has been introduced and a Border Collie is just the right “shape shifting breed! Silas Ek, I too, see Beatrix as a Maine Coon because of her Huge polydactyle paws! Puck getting all puffy when seeing the ” huge cat” Every panel is a treasure! Thanks, Georgia!
So, I think I’m safe in assuming this is not Leia the pitbull who lives with Tommy and Sophie in real life since this character appears to be a male border collie. (Is he wearing slippers?) Is this maybe based on a real dog who lives on the farm with Burt? A border collie would be a natural at barn catting, er, barn dogging? uhm, farming?
I had to do a double take looking at the title
Panel 11, look closely and you can see the dogs pupils…
But that is a REALLY good painting of the dogs face in that panel
I was staring at it for a while, so lifelike…
Panel 12: "Its been a weird day" I guess he had a "ruff" morning! Thank god for tea!! Haha *gets dragged back to bed by grandma's cats*
Thanks Georgia for another great strip. There was so much I enjoyed about this strip It is wonderful to see the Breaking Cat world expanding. There’s Beatrix, the young intern, who is full of surprises. Loved how she was open to being friends with the dog right from the instant she saw it, and not afraid because it was supposed to be an enemy. And she had just what he needed to feel better after his weird day. Like a true friend, Burt was not happy with what the cats were saying about dogs, and he made sure to tell them. It was great how Beatrix cam along at the perfect moment to deflect what could get tense and brightened it back to a happy end.
I love the border collie. My grandparents had one for a few years when I was in my teens and she looked like this one. When I was younger, as far back as I can remember, they had a collie/shepherd mix that they named Pepper because he had black spots in the white patches on his legs. His best friend was the tom cat they had, named Tom. They shared his dog house and even ate together until the cat died when Pepper was 10. I can remember taking my new cat over to him, and everyone telling me I was going to get scratched, but I didn’t. The new cat, Blackie, became friends with Pepper and was with him until he died.
This is the best way to start my day. Forget the coffee, just pour me a cup of absolute cuteness. (Just joking about no coffee… still need coffee, so if you can send Beatrix with a cup, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.)
Brilliant! 75 years ago (I was 3) my mother brought home a dog from the SPCA and was told the dog was a mutt. My mother always said Cinders was the best babysitter she ever had. She ‘dogged’ my every step when we were outside and would not allow me to step a foot off the property. (I tried and tried to no avail.) Turned out she was a full-blooded Border Collie and I miss her beyond words to this day. This new turn of events is just perfect. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Through a dear friend of mine I have been lucky to know two border collies, and each of them have been incredible dogs. They are awesome dogs!
Good morning! I love the addition of the Border Collie. And I, like Beatrix, always carry extra, “emergency” tea bags. There’s little that a good cuppa can’t fix.
Awww….Georgia, you’ve outdone yourself once again! I smile every time I power up my computer and see an email for BCN, ’cause I know it’s going to make me smile, laugh and yes, sometimes a little teary-eyed. But it always helps me start my day off on the right “paw.”
Wow Elvis didn’t panic, a first for him i think! Love the tea bag string hanging out of Beatrix’s pocket & her climbing on top of The Dog’s head (he must be a very patient dog to allow her to do that), Puck’s puffiness and his shape shifting chart about their bitey enemy! It’s so sweet how all of the natural enemies of the cats get along in your strip. Would that that could be in real life.
Love the dog shape-shifter chart!l have loved EVERY panel of BCN with pointers and charts since “thunderstorm = vacuum cleaner” many moons ago.(Which would make a great coffee mug illustration, by the way.) I think these “Science Update” features deserve at least two whole strips a month (or four half-strips a month). I for one am woefully ignorant of feline scholarship and need to be informed!
Today’s strip shows why it’s such a great idea to keep the boys based in New England: the changing of the seasons! By the way, the BCN strip itself has a calming presence, at least for me. =^..^=
As if BCN could not get any more PERFECT (my cat could be Pucky’s twin), along comes a dog that looks like my childhood dog, Rascal – part border collie, part Samoyed <3.
LOVE The Dog!
Puck’s puffy tail is so cute (don’t think we have seen a puffy Puck before.)
And I love the shape shifter poster.
Getting this in my email at any time is a special treat, I just love it!
We get far more poofy Elvis of course, but we have seen poofy Puck before – when Tommy first came into the apartment at the end of the first Christmas special springs to mind. Anyone recall a poofy Lupin? Or is the “Cat of Adventure” too sang froid for that? 🙂
Pucks tail sound effect. dogs are shape shifters. proof is on the poster which makes it true according to cats. lol
Beatrix on dogs head an dogs smile. great job on capturing the look of a boarder collie.
is it a New England thing or is Beatrix English in regards to always having a tea bag on hand? always ready to put the kettle on for a cup of tea.
So, it looks like the student has surpassed the masters, Beatrix saving the day 🙂 Also I’m thinking its that childlike thing where the learned behaviors of discriminating against someone because they are different have not taken hold, she likes everyone. I think her encounter with Sophie on the wall may have also been a teachable moment for her, because Sophie did not get mad and was a great role model for her. All of these wonderful lessons Georgia, you make people remember who they should be. It’s truly your calling..God bless you my friend 🙂
Nice doggie! My husband thinks you need to introduce a Mastiff (his favorite breed of dog). Wouldn’t it be funny to meet a huge Mastiff who is afraid of cats? Puck: “DOG!” (Super puffy) Mastiff: “EEK! Don’t hurt me!” Mastiffs are sweet dogs but they can be Cowardly Lions. We knew a female mastiff who, when she heard a camera rewinding nearby, leapt into my husband’s lap!
So, with the strip not showing up yesterday, and with today’s being April Fool’s Day, I thought it would be funny if you had a “Breaking Dog News” with dogs taking over the station. We weren’t quite on the same page, but we did have the same title. Love it.
I live in the eastern time zone and went to bed before the comic was up so I checked it this morning before I had put my contacts in. My first thought was there was a new cat and then I looked closer and I decided the new cat looked like a dog. 🙂 First I thought Beatrix was going to be afraid of the dog but it turned out she was concerned about not know about him before she went on her coffee run. Fortunately she carries those extra tea bags.
At first I couldn’t tell what was in front of her face in panel 10 and then I figure out they are her big fluffy paws. 🙂
Glad to hear the dog will be around for awhile. I was considering the date and thought maybe he was just passing through. I grew up with barn cats and farm dogs – they are the best ! A lot of the farmers had English shepherds – a wonderful breed not AKC registered, I suppose all the dogs in Granger Twp were related !
Bea is clearly one of those kittens who will never meet an anything she doesn’t like. Such a sweetie. And the kitten on the doggie head is so true in so many cases! Have the Boys ever met a dog in real life? The “OMC what is THAT” reaction and the third hand info on how dogs work is adorable as they figure out what this canine thing Tommy’s found is.
From the outfit, coloring, and Burt association, I’m guessing sheepdog from either Burt’s farm or another one nearby. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see how a sheepdog works the sheep when you can understand the words involved!
This is a mellow fellow! All the border collies I’ve ever known are *motivated.* My dear friend’s lovely dog spent an entire party trying to herd us all into one room. (She was frustrated that we wouldn’t stay put.) Looking forward to learning more about Burt’s buddy!
Many years ago I had a collie mix dog. She was small (her mom was mostly beagle, dad was a collie that could jump a 6 foot fence) about sheltie/boarder collie size. She would herd anything and everything.
If we took her on a hike she would scout the trail ahead, then run back, checker each person hiking, then get behind the last person and nudge him (or her) until he caught up to the next person, then she run up the trail again, scout some more, then back to make the last person catch up. Over and over. She must have run three times as far as we hiked.
She also tried herding cats, well kittens. My Mom’s cat had a litter of 5 kittens that were about 4 or 5 weeks old. She (the mother cat) needed a break and would leave the kittens in the back yard with the dog and go off hunting. The dog would round of the kittens, then lay down with her front legs outstretched. She tried to keep all five kitties between her paws. One after another the kittens would wander off. The dog would get up, and using her nose, roll the wandering kitten back to the others, lie down with them between her paws until another babe would take off. This would go on for a couple of hours. I think the dog enjoyed herself. I know the mom cat enjoyed the time off.
Ha ha! I was eating lunch at work and couldn’t stop laughing, at the part of dogs being shape shifters, loved it. Extra tea bags and coffee run, pawsome!
Love the dog! He must be a Scot. What is it with kittens climbing onto dogs heads? Our newly adopted Mr. Whiskers (the kitten who refused to die) likes nothing better than to climb up on the German Shepherds’ head and bite her ears. The poor dog puts up with it and retaliates by trying to pick him up like a puppy In the dog’s favor Whiskers is getting too big to slink into some of the “safe places” he used to fit in. As always, it is impossible to keep a straight face in the presence of a kitten! Love your work Georgia. You are amazing.
“Earl Grey — Hot” would have been better. But a grand story nonetheless. Looking forward to more trans-species interactions. (But not with the snake).
Cheerio!
My cat drinks my earl grey tea, and I do not put milk in it, she also eats orange marmalade. anyone else have a weirdo cat? Or is it Just my twisted Bombay Baby?
That’s what’s wonderful about cats. Most are delightfully weird. One girl cat I had was from a rescued female that I didn’t know was pregnant. Her daughter, as a kitten, was the first to eat solid food. But after that first bit of meat, she refused to touch meat again and dislike good quality cat food. Her favourite treat was apples. I couldn’t leave them out or I’d find she had gnawed apples trying to get a proper bite out of one (or many). She also loved strawberries.
The cat I had before the one I have now LOVED raw green beans. I’ve probably mentioned it before. He wasn’t a fussy eater, enjoying raw and cooked potatoes, broccoli, sweet red peppers and raw mushrooms as well as cat food and raw or cooked meat. But his all-time favourite was his green beans – cat candy to him. Among my friends and local grocers, he became ‘famous’ for it. He was a funny sweet boy.
Heh. The shapeshifter thing… it’s funny, but at the same time it demonstrates something that was discussed on a British TV show a few years ago, namely that dogs have a far greater diversity of body shapes than any other animal, and *nobody knows why*.
Until we learn otherwise, I’m gonna imagine it was Tillie who directed Beatrix to the BCN’s window for rescuing. Freddie would still do anything she could to help a kitty and Tillie knows, at least Puck.
Discussion (118) ¬
I was totally suprised by the dog part!
“Our bitey enemy” ROFL
Beatrix continues to rock. Love her climbing right up on the dog’s head.
Oh man, I wanted to add something, but I forgot, and then I re-read the strip hoping to jog my memory, and it didn’t. And of course as soon as I hit Post, I remembered.

LOL! Too funny! 😀
I wondered if there were any dogs in the BCN world.
OMG. A dog! Beatrix saves the day!
So cute. Elvis not puffy but Lupin is, that is different. Beatrix does get around and having an extra tea bag is too funny. Love the dogs heart nose. Such attention to detail. Is he based on a real dog?
Meant to say Puck puffy.
He is, indeed!! In time, he’ll be the first animal to have an about page who is not a cat! 🙂 …I really need to update the about pages.
But…don’t The Robber Mice already have an entry on the “About” page? Although it seems to have been composed before we had learned their names ;-(
They do have an entry on the page that lists the characters, but alas, they do not have their own about page yet. I think only Elivs, Puck, Lupin, Tommy, Tabitha, and Sir Figaro do right now.
Will there be an “About” for le adorable Bea?
Yes! She has just a little bit more to reveal before I can write her interests and role in the studio. 😉
Is our new canine friend a border collie? And Bea is too adorable for words.
Yes! He is a border collie! 😀
Which means, sooner or later, he’ll try to herd the cats … The imagery! Oh the imagery!
You’re probably right that being outdoors isn’t high on the Boys’ list. Georgia will no doubt enlighten us on Beatrix getting in and out as this continues.
Lupin and Puck! Don’t be rude!
I love how chill the dog is – must be Burt’s calming presence!
I just read the dog with a Scottish accent! Love Beatrix and her tea bags, can she come to mine on the weekend to fill my cup? x
That was the voice I heard when I read it.
I hear Beatrix as one of the peppy, bubbly high school cheerleader interns. 8^)
I’ve worked with several people like that,
all of them good people.
So did I. Must be the tam.
I saw that as a flat cap and heard him in Yorkshire… 🙂
It looks like a flat cap to me. I’ve lived in Scotland for twenty years and never seen anyone wearing a tam, anyway. You see flat caps around occasionally in Scotland and England, usually on older men. Though my partner has one and he’s thirty-five.
He could be a guid Scots dog! Tommy, on the other hand, could only be American.
This is as adorable as ever, and I’m loving Beatrix’s huge paws.
Aww, brave little Beatrix! I love that she carries emergency tea bags!
I notice we don’t yet know The Dog’s name. I’m curious whether he will remain The Dog. 🙂
Elvis and his reference book, lol. I wonder who wrote those “facts” he looks up.
I never realised until now that BCN needs more dogs!
I’ve been hoping for a dog character for some time and this first appearance and the boys and Beatrix’s reactions are wonderful.
He is wearing slippers! And in real life this dog does not live with Burt, but they actually are real life friends who visit each other often!
I tried to figure out what his footwear was but wasn’t sure. Slippers – that’s so cute!
Thank you!! 😀
PUFFY PUCK TAIL!! Ahhhhh<3
I love that Beatrix knew it was a dog right away, while Elvis thought it was a giant cat at first. She’s quite the smart kitten!
I love this! 😀 The dog is super cool! Love his flat cap. <3 Beatrix has true manners–she knows how to treat a guest!
Shape-shifting?? ROTFL
Thanks Georgia for another great strip. There was so much I enjoyed about this strip It is wonderful to see the Breaking Cat world expanding. HAHA!!!
Regular or decaffeinated?
I like Beatrix.
Good morning! I love the addition of the Border Collie. And I, like Beatrix, always carry extra, “emergency” tea bags. There’s little that a good cuppa can’t fix.
Love the doggie!
Huge cat! RotFL at ‘huge cat’. I loved this so much!
Is the special coffee with lots of whipped topping for Tommy, or Beatrix? 😀
Awww….Georgia, you’ve outdone yourself once again! I smile every time I power up my computer and see an email for BCN, ’cause I know it’s going to make me smile, laugh and yes, sometimes a little teary-eyed. But it always helps me start my day off on the right “paw.”
Awww, the puppy dog eyes, and Bea right on the case with tea. 😺
Panel 11 is amazing, Georgia! If you were worried about painting dogs you totally nailed it.
Today’s strip shows why it’s such a great idea to keep the boys based in New England: the changing of the seasons! By the way, the BCN strip itself has a calming presence, at least for me. =^..^=
I LOVE the sound effect on Puck’s tail!
Me too!!!!
I keep imagining the sound of an umbrella opening.
That’s pretty much the exact sound I was going for!
Last fall’s Halloween Special Part One, http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/breaking-cat-news-halloween-special-part-one/ last 3 panels, for Poofy Puck, and the first panel of Part 7 http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/breaking-cat-news-halloween-special-part-seven/ for hilariously Poofy Lupin.
I had a re-read of some back issues last night – Lupin and Sir Figaro both went briefly poofy when they first met. 🙂
The puffiest i remember Puck’s tail being is in the broadcast:
The bi-monthly 2 am “Running of the Cats.”
by Georgia Dunn on August 26, 2014 at 9:24 pm
“Mother of Cat!!”
The bitey enemy! A dog on April Fools Day too. Just keeps getting better.
Is he a tripod dog?
He is not, it may just be the way I have him standing here.
Thank you, Mary!!
I kinda wanna smoosh Bea. She is the cutest little furball, and she’s kind and sweet and ALWAYS prepared.
Tea helps everything!
Emergency tea-bags – Beatrix rocks!
Love how during one of Beatrix’s “coffee runs” all you see is a tray full of coffee cups and kittie paws. Wonder how she see where she’s going? LOL
Actually, I’m wondering if the snake-in-the-stone-wall might become a character.
By cat! this is a dog who i’ll enjoy!
By the way who’s the dog based on in real life?
That shall be revealed soon! 🙂
For a moment I thought Beatrix was spooked by the dog. She is a little trooper.
I love that it appears Burt is patting the dog’s back when the boys are speaking ill of dogs. How sweet.
and darling Tommy first to befriend, and interview, any new face on the block
What a lovely dog, not a bit bitey!!! Glad the kitties gave him some air-time!!!
That’s interesting since I was wondering what the dogs were like in this series not too long ago.

A lot of the farmers had English shepherds – a wonderful breed not AKC registered, I suppose all the dogs in Granger Twp were related !
puck reminds me so much of my cat Frank and acts just like him
Bea is clearly one of those kittens who will never meet an anything she doesn’t like. Such a sweetie. And the kitten on the doggie head is so true in so many cases! I think maybe Bert keeps his friend on an even keel.
That’s hilarious, Jody! I immediately got a mental picture of a poor confused frustrated dog trying so hard to do what he thought was his job!
I may have mentioned this before: my mom had a dog who was of a herding breed. She said that the dog kept trying to herd her into a certain room.
Why do I get the feeling Beatrix will grow up to be a librarian (cat) or a kindergarten teacher(cat)?
I do have to say – seeing a title like “Breaking Dog News” on April 1st had me expecting a whole different strip….
Cheerio!
Heartwarming.
I LOVE DOGS (actually more than cats, whoops) so I am delighted to meet a dog in BCN! I wondered if we ever would!
My cat drinks my earl grey tea, and I do not put milk in it, she also eats orange marmalade. anyone else have a weirdo cat? Or is it Just my twisted Bombay Baby?
Mine likes eastern North Carolina barbecue. 🙂
Perfect strip. Every part of it works for me. What wonderful imagery you come up with!! Thanks!
Awww…!!!
*goes to make some tea*
Heh. The shapeshifter thing… it’s funny, but at the same time it demonstrates something that was discussed on a British TV show a few years ago, namely that dogs have a far greater diversity of body shapes than any other animal, and *nobody knows why*.
Aww, just a sweet boy!
Until we learn otherwise, I’m gonna imagine it was Tillie who directed Beatrix to the BCN’s window for rescuing. Freddie would still do anything she could to help a kitty and Tillie knows, at least Puck.
Love that idea.
This is doggone good.
Panel 11 has Mr. Dog looking like Alan Bates a la Far From the Maddening Crowd … I love border collies 🙂
I carry emergency tea bags too! Awesome!
