Does the bag beside the news desk say costume shop?? Can’t see Elvis jumping, maybe swatting it or pouncing on it though. Love Puck’s chart, he is so talented!!! Lupin such a goofy fun loving sweet heart!
Aw, so cute! I read about this on Care2, though, where it’s pointed out that the cucumbers are put behind cats while they’re eating and they freak out because the area around the food dish should be a safe space for them, so it being “invaded” by this strange object is actually very frightening for them…. Don’t mean to put a damper on it, but thought you should know 🙁
But she’s not telling people to do this to their cats irl, just commenting on a meme. Lots of things the BCN kitties do in cartoon world would be scary/dangerous/traumatic in the real world. I am especially concerned that Lupin somehow got hold of money/credit cards and went shopping. If kitties can do that, they can overthrow their great Opposable Thumb Overlords.
I actually saw an article from some behavior doctor that this is actually animal cruelty! They said that the stress it causes is awful and that it shows that people are mean when we laugh at these cats! Realzies? Can you say ‘I take myself way too seriously!’? It IS a strange thing to find another person’s scared funny but life is too short not to laugh at our missteps! Think these researchers need to get out more! For REALZIES! (love the cucumber costume…think I need one…)
I know this comment is a bit late, but, I have to admit that I literally fell off the couch laughing when I read Lupin with paint on his paws. Especially panel 6 of the living room.
Seems to be the article that most other articles are quoting.
So like a few people said above, please don’t do this to your kitties; you don’t want to frighten them away from their food dishes! (If one cat does it to another cat, though, I’m not sure if they can be held accountable…that Lupin is such a mischief-maker!)
I agree. People have become so self-centered that they think it’s OK to scare their pets (or even their children) as long at it makes people laugh. If anyone intentionally scares my cat (or my kids) just for fun, they’re gonna have to answer to me!
Another brilliant one! I have to say I have a “puck” and they are just so much fun! Oh, the stories…….haha! I am still not over over the space goo. Keep them coming !!! 🙂
I have never tried to scare my cats on purpose, though I do have to say there are times when something I do or a noise will spook them. Often the source that triggers the event is completely beyond me.
Humans “enjoy” being frightened (horror movies, “amusement” park rides, etc.) – cats do not. They retain much of their wild ancestors’ instinct. For them, this is a life threat, and they react in the extreme of self preservation. For them, it’s NOT a joke (an anthropomorphic “sense of humor !). Worse, if your frightened kitty should hurt you, a family member, him/herself or revert to/acquire “bad” behaviors as a result – THEY will be the ones blamed/punished for their human’s stupid, self-centered actions – NOT FAIR ! The strip is great, Georgia (as always), but the behavior of these Tube-Netizens is abusive and reprehensible.
Thanks to Puck, I will always think of dill pickles as ’embalmed cucumbers’ now.
Love the little details you add, Georgia to your drawings! I’ve seen thumbs on the Boys’ paws before but this time, all three Boys have a thumb showing for that bit of extra information conveyed. 😻
Love the chart ! My summer job after high school was in a pickle-packing plant and in the course of teaching I spent many a lesson in Ancient Egypt ! The analogy is PERFECT !
I’ve lived with cats for 50 years and during this time I’ve noticed that cats seem to scare themselves without any help from a human. A dropped item of clothing can scare them; in fact anything that’s a little out of place can make them jump two feet in the air. So far no psychological harm has been detected. Georgia, I’ll bet you never thought your sweet little comic strip could cause such a response. I think it was very funny.
Amen! We play hide and seek with our oldest which consists of running to one room then jumping out at her when she RUNS to find you, over and over again. This may be “scary” to some cats, yet completely harmless to others. Some people are just a bit too dramatic.
Not all of your strips make me laugh out loud after reading the first panel, but this one did! Love it! Missed the the bag on the first read through, that’s why I love the comments.
I’m so glad some folks did miss it the first time through! I tried to sort of sneak that detail in, hoping it would be caught in re-reads. I kept worrying it would stick out, haha!
No worries, Georgia! I always reread a couple of times on different days. The comments always point out details I’ve missed. (Doh!) And I love all those fun little Easter eggs! Thank you!
Funny script. It’s much funnier than the video. I do not like to see cats scared by any thing. I’ve read it’s not good to do that to cats. When I have scared one of my cats, I always go to them to calm them.
Have to wonder if Elvis’s reaction to a cat-sized cucumber will be Swat or Jump. Our Nervous Cats could go either way when they were startled, and Elvis’s nose has to be telling him Lupin’s nearby…
Must have been six or seven years ago when I noticed a lot of gifs of cats being startled by bananas, or in some cases just banana peels. One had the peel placed next to the sleeping kitty, who later wakes up, notices it and tears out of the room.
Don’t think the “thinks it’s a snake” theory works for this. And there are other vids of cats happily nomming away on a banana that’s held up for them. Why this older meme has suddenly been transferred to pickles is beyond me.
Finally caught up! A friend posted the Shelter Cats strip and I had to read all the archives… and share with my husband, too!
Elvis reminds me of my Grumpy Old Man cat, Keon. My Scrumpy has a personality like a combination of Lupin and Tommy. Love the strip! The humor is great, and the art is amazing; I love how it’s perfect and different from other webcomics.
I was wondering, Georgia, if you had time (haha, right? with two little ones?), would you consider doing some icons for things like forums and stuff? There’s so many moments that seem just perfect for it!
Having had two cats hit by Rattlesnakes, I don’t want to scare any of the existing cats with a cucumber. The two cats had been inside cats who insisted on going out like the others of the cat family managed to rack up several thousand dollars in vet bills. The Midwest cats who came with us to California had never seen a rattlesnake, but sat in a semi circle around a rattler who was trying its best to climb the foundation of the house rather than do battle with the gang of seven suggesting he go elsewhere. It was a “please, let me outta here” moment for the poor snake. AS always Georgia, you hit a home run!
Puck ! Lupin ! Ganging up on Elvis ! They are more than a news team, they are a brotherhood. I am thinking of how they were so worried last year when Elvis went exploring and was lost overnight. They can pick on each other without mercy but have each other’s…..uh…..tail. Puck is clearly complicit in this gag, as he did not conjure up the chart with a snap of his paws.
I think because: Cats needs to be wary of the unknown as it could be any harmful predator or a snake.” He went on to say that “I think that the cats would react the same way to a model spider, a human face mask or a plastic fish.

Hee.
Good job keeping up on cat memes, Georgia! There must be a million of them out there.
Lupin’s just happy to see you.
AbsoLUTEly perfect, m’dear! Thank you for a great start to the week. Loved, loved, LOVED it…as always.
This is a real problem! I have seen the videos! lol Great comic as usual Georgia. Thank you!
Where does a cat find a cucumber costume? Love this.
Not just a cucumber costume, but a cat-sized cucumber costume!! 🙂
They make them for children. So perhaps the humans got one for the baby and Lupin stole it?
At the Costume Shop, obviously. Didn’t you see the bag by the anchor desk in the first panel?
I love it. Lupin playing a practical joke on Elvis.
cucumbercostumes.com, duh!
Love Lupin’s fast change into the Costume Shop disguise. Elvis’s raection must be priceless…
Will Elvis leap as far as some of those Internet-Cats? We can but imagine =^..^=
OMG! i was only wondering a couple of days ago what they would make of the whole cucumber thing, lol
costume shop. you;ll have to limit Lupin’s credit card activity
Hahaha!!
Does the bag beside the news desk say costume shop?? Can’t see Elvis jumping, maybe swatting it or pouncing on it though. Love Puck’s chart, he is so talented!!! Lupin such a goofy fun loving sweet heart!
It does!! Good eye, Gloria! 😀
silly Lupin! Someone I know did try this and his cat was very unimpressed 😀
I only discovered the whole cat/cucumber thing this past weekend. Such timely breaking news!!
I see Lupin came prepared – In panel one you can see the bag that the costume came in.
Aw, so cute! This cucumber thing is not funny, the cats instinctively think it’s a snake and panic. This can traumatize them.
I totally agree. people are so starved for attention that they do anything to get a few likes or whatever. So very sad.
It’s definitely funny here, but I meant it’s not funny in real life.

I had to look this up! I’m so behind the meme-times. : (
Lupin and his little costume bag are hilarious though.
This article on Gizmodo says why it’s a bad idea to mix cats and cucumbers:
http://gizmodo.com/why-you-should-resist-the-overwhelming-urge-to-torment-1743740426#_ga=1.268762680.899766788.1418337355
That chart is amazing!
Hopefully no one scaring their kitties in real life – but in the spirit of panto he’s behind you! Oh yes he is !!!
Did anybody notice how behind Lupin’s desk there is a bag labelled COSTUME
SHOP?=^~^=
Love this one. That half hidden costume shop bag was a great give away that Lupin, (it had to be Lupin) would try to scare Elvis.
I’ve seen the videos and i can’t understand why people who claim to love their cats would do this to them.
I know this comment is a bit late, but, I have to admit that I literally fell off the couch laughing when I read Lupin with paint on his paws. Especially panel 6 of the living room.
Here’s the best source I found as to why people shouldn’t do this: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/11/151117-cats-cucumbers-videos-behavior/

Thank you, I think startling a cat is a mean thing to do. Do you really love them if you play mean tricks on them?
I agree. People have become so self-centered that they think it’s OK to scare their pets (or even their children) as long at it makes people laugh. If anyone intentionally scares my cat (or my kids) just for fun, they’re gonna have to answer to me!
Ha! Lupin is such a little stinker. Love it, and no, I would never scare my cat like that.
Oh, I can just imagine how big Elvis’s tail is going to fluff out when he does turn around! 🙂
Georgia,
Another brilliant one! I have to say I have a “puck” and they are just so much fun! Oh, the stories…….haha! I am still not over over the space goo. Keep them coming !!! 🙂
I lived with a Siamese for 18 years and they are very athletic. I’m pretty sure Elvis’ leap will be quite spectacular!
Thank you Georgia for the wonderful comic today,
Thank you to the robber mice for bringing Lupin his costume “behind the scenes” 🙂
i *love* Lupin’s face in the final frame! I may look at it all day.
LOL!! Those evil cucumbers! They must be stopped! :p

Clearly I’m gonna need to click on some of these links I’ve been avoiding ’cause they looked stupid…
Love the comparison to pickles & mummies. And Lupin’s face in the last panel – I foresee a very bushy Elvis running the other way!
I had a cat who loved cucumber skins. I mean raid the garbage, throw the fish heads aside love of cuke skins.
Elvis got it right! (See frame 4). Worse, it’s not funny either: ccz
Are they sure of their story? In “The Ladykillers,” Pickles the cat sneaked up on humans.
Love the chart ! My summer job after high school was in a pickle-packing plant and in the course of teaching I spent many a lesson in Ancient Egypt ! The analogy is PERFECT !

I think the whole controversy in these comments is funny! 🙂 Georgia’s strips are always great, but some of these comments… 😉

i agree with previous emails. If you love cats ,you don’t frighten
them with cucumbers for fun during their meals,it’s horrible to them.
We refuse to acknowledge it either! MOL!
I love Puck’s charts so much!
Not all of your strips make me laugh out loud after reading the first panel, but this one did! Love it! Missed the the bag on the first read through, that’s why I love the comments.

I laughed through the entire script!!! To funny, love elvis and that looks like Tommy in a cucumber outfit!!
Oops,that was Lupin!!
Georgia, I’m not a detail oerson, but am learning to Find Things in every panel. I missed the bag in the very first panel!!!
Lupin better be careful. Elvis is a Siamese and they never forget. We all know what payback is. If Lupin thinks he’s in a pickle now, just wait.
😛

Dun dun dun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will he look or will he not? What is the answer? Nobody knows.
Look out Elvis!

If I do, I may! On the the Facebook page (Georgia Dunn Studio) sometimes I am able to post avatars or whatnot for folks!
Yay!!

Cats totes love pickles. Not like cucumbers.
