This may be one of my all time favorite comebacks ever. And it was penned by Georgia Dunn. I to will make it one of my life’s goals to use it to defuse tense situations.
Huh. Clearly young people understand things I do not. I’m okay with that. It looked like Baba Mouse was as stumped as I was anyway about Beatrix wanting us to know. I’m in good company.
I read the comic once.
I read all of the comments.
I read the comic again and pick up everything I missed.
No other comic has ever engaged me as completely as Breaking Cat News.
Thank you (again) Georgia!
I totally second that! There is no other comic I read that I will read the comments after I have read the comic. I just move on to the next. Not so with BCN!
I agree. I have and entire bookcase of cartoon books, read the daily comics and this is the only one where I read the comments and look back at the amazing artwork. Georgia, you are the best out there.
I do the same thing. Only, now that the comics go up on Go Comics first, I read the comic and the comments there and do the same after it’s up here! This is some of the best storytelling I’ve found. The art is delightful and I love the characters. Thank you, Georgia for giving BCN to the world!!!
And if you are like me, you come back a few more times to enjoy the comic again (since they never fail to brighten my day) and to see what new comments have been posted.
yes, I do that, too. This is not a comic to just glimpse. It stays with you. You have to think and feel your way through. Each fur or feather person is uniquely him or herself.
I love the look on Bea’s face in the selfie. I’ve seen that same look on my kids’ faces over various things. And I pretty sure I made the same sort of face many (many) years ago over something my my Mom or Dad did that showed how out of touch they were with the modern world.
Have you ever read the Incryptid series by Seanan McGuire? She has a species of mice in her book called the Aeslinn mice who are very talkative and are obsessed with religious observances (their own religion, of course, not one of the standard ones we have in RL). They are hilariously adorable and Alice and the girls remind me of them!
Third-ing that. IMO you would love the Incryptid series:
Discount Armageddon, Midnight Blue-Light special, Half-off Ragnarok & Pocket Apocalypse
The Mice are wonderful, but Seanan’s take on cryptids is really positive
Alice is great at manipulating Wicket! Love how relaxed she is with her legs crossed. Wicket saying he could have been a pro reminded me of Brando’s ” I couldha been a contenda!”
I love the strip, I love the drawing, I love the stories, I love the community of fans that has sprung up, I love the book, and I love the framed print of the boys I purchased! I also love the fact that I discovered BCN almost when it first appeared! It’s been an incredible ride, and I look forward to many more great adventures in the future! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Georgia!
I think Bea is showing the same embarrassment that many “youngsters” feel when their grown-up is being ‘hip” (or cool, or what ever the word is now). It’s the same look my kids had when I intruded on their Nintendo world and the same look I had anytime my Dad tried saying something funny about the Beatles.
So am I the only one worried that apparently Agnes is going to play the role of the Golden Mouse? I am channeling my inner Pucky here” No, no, no, no…” Puck will freak out if Agnes is put in danger. We saw how upset he got about Buzzy Mouse at Christmas…I’m thinking that will be multiplied by three if Agnes is put in danger.
Outstanding storytelling, outstanding art, unspeakable gentle wisdom, Georgia, you need to illustrate AND write books for children. Maybe this is the start of the Dunn Media Empire ?
‘re the ongoing camera debate… during the initial bout of late night screeching Burt set up a live feed to the tree… I imagine we are watching that feed
I just wanted to say that I too read BCN on my GoComics feed in the morning, and then go to the GoComics BCN page and the BCN Website and Twitter feed later to read the comments, as there is always some little touch or meaning that I missed. Then of course I have to read the comic again :)!
I think Agnes IS the Golden Mouse / has the powers of the Golden Mouse. Agnes and Alice are sisters, Alice just told Wicket she’s descended from the Golden Mouse (so is Agnes), and Agnes is golden-coloured.
Quinapalus, the mustache serves plenty of purpose – it’s very expressive, and combined with the owl’s eyes it conveys a world of character. Georgia is an expert at using small elements to show a depth of character unusual for a “mere” cartoon. (Unless you were quoting something obscure, in which case, never mind)
Rereading this a year and a half later – oh god, “Have I mentioned that I have the very best screech?” suddenly has a WHOLE new meaning. But thankfully Wicket is far nicer than that.
(I am having an absolutely awful time of it right now and rereading BCN is helping me keep it together, Georgia, so thank you yet again.)
I’m happy it can be a help to you right now Eve! I’m sorry you’re having a rough time of it, be as good as you can to yourself right now. (Let reading comics be a part of that!)
“Hey! You’re bad at small talk!” shall become my go-to response whenever someone says something I don’t like! Loving it all!
This may be one of my all time favorite comebacks ever. And it was penned by Georgia Dunn. I to will make it one of my life’s goals to use it to defuse tense situations.
To paraphrase Ghostbusters, “When someone asks you if you’re a magician you say yes!”
lol I thought the same thing! =)
The plot thickens and twists … in ways that delight.
the very best screech…and mustache 🙂 Go Agatha!
And so it begins…
Be careful Alice. I don’t trust him.
Glad to see she is OK.
Oh, I think she’ll be ok. She thinks on her feet. Notice how she takes control of the conversation when he asks her if she is a magician.
Oh,Agnes what a brave little mouse you are. Be very wary of that owl
So, technically, this wasn’t caught on a BCN camera. But according to the twitter feed, it is a new report. How did Beatrix know? Georgia?
Beatrix is very plugged into social media. She knows things before most of us do. 😉
Huh. Clearly young people understand things I do not. I’m okay with that. It looked like Baba Mouse was as stumped as I was anyway about Beatrix wanting us to know. I’m in good company.
Love the “who.” which i heard as a startled gasp rather than a question.
Alice’s effort at psychological warfare is very impressive. I love it!
This gets more exciting every episode!
Why do I feel sorry for the owl 😕
Love the green eyes peering out of the hidey hole in panel 2!
I like Alice’s expression when Wicket asks her is she is a great magician!
“I could have gone Pro” haha!!
Wicket sounds a wee bit “Trumpian” in Panel 3.
I read the comic once.
I read all of the comments.
I read the comic again and pick up everything I missed.
No other comic has ever engaged me as completely as Breaking Cat News.
Thank you (again) Georgia!
You’re welcome, Victoria!! Thank you!
I totally second that! There is no other comic I read that I will read the comments after I have read the comic. I just move on to the next. Not so with BCN!

Hmm . . . ghosts? Is this how Tillie is going to play a role?
Jessie – I think Tillie has already played her role – bringing the fact that it’s 4th July (with its’ owl scaring fireworks) to Pucks’ attention.
Wow. First strip I remember with no cats in it. Love the position of Alice’s feet in panels 5 and 6.
Hah, I love Alice’s moxy! Of *course* she’s a great magician, what else could a green-eyed mouse be???
Is this the first Breaking Cat News without a cat, or am I forgetting something?
Baba Mouse and Bea selfie on Twitter account is absolutely toooo cute! ! !
I love the look on Bea’s face in the selfie. I’ve seen that same look on my kids’ faces over various things. And I pretty sure I made the same sort of face many (many) years ago over something my my Mom or Dad did that showed how out of touch they were with the modern world.
What an exciting update! Alice is one great con artist!
Looking at Frame 3, I’m strongly reminded of The Donald. Same charming modesty, same “very best” screech.
It amazes me the range of emotions and character that you show on the owl’s face with just a few brush strokes. This story just keeps getting better.
Alice is so delightfully angry in Panel 17. Her teeth look more dangerous than the needle-swords are.

I have not, but that sounds like something I would love!
Oh yes, you would love them
Third-ing that. IMO you would love the Incryptid series:

The Mice are wonderful, but Seanan’s take on cryptids is really positive
Is this the FIRST comic where none of the action has been caught on camera? It’s like we suddenly have some omniscient narrator…
that’s exactly what i was thinking too.
Alice is great at manipulating Wicket! Love how relaxed she is with her legs crossed. Wicket saying he could have been a pro reminded me of Brando’s ” I couldha been a contenda!”

Thank you, Fritz!! That makes me so happy to read! <3
Thanks for the tip MeowMix – Baba Mouse selfy on Twitter hee! Hee! – you’re doing great Baba Mouse 🙂
Checked the Twitter feed thanks to your post. The selfie post is great. XD I like how Baba still says “This is a hoot!” considering the owl thing.
I do wonder what Beatrix is embarrassed about. My best guess is just that Baba is using her phone.
Baba is surprisingly good at chatspeak/l33tsp34k/textspeak/whathave. XD
…I’m guessing the “Wicket/Wicked” pun has already been mentioned, but I somehow only just got it. XD (They’d certainly sound the same with MY drawl.)
I think we have strayed from our remit here.
Is this is the first episode without a cat or reference to a cat. Can you remember another? It is not, therefore, breaking CAT news.
It’s great & I love it, but I demand more cats. (Tongue firmly in cheek)
omg, the ‘who’ panel- so great!
I wouldn’t be surprised if Beatrix had an another cellphone with her.
Sorry, I meant Alice….
Can’t wait to see where this all leads 🙂
The Aeslin mice are very much about celebrating festivals. They also shout HAIL! a lot. As in, “Hail, the Giver of Cake and Cheese!”
Emily- or The Rats of NIMH
So am I the only one worried that apparently Agnes is going to play the role of the Golden Mouse? I am channeling my inner Pucky here” No, no, no, no…” Puck will freak out if Agnes is put in danger. We saw how upset he got about Buzzy Mouse at Christmas…I’m thinking that will be multiplied by three if Agnes is put in danger.
MOUSTACHE SERVES NO PURPOSE
Outstanding storytelling, outstanding art, unspeakable gentle wisdom, Georgia, you need to illustrate AND write books for children. Maybe this is the start of the Dunn Media Empire ?
I love Alice’s little feet crossed. So cute.
I love the little Band-Aids in her bum. I hope she wasn’t TOO hurt in the struggle!
ok, you’ve hooked him, reel him in!😸
Cue the Dunn Media Empire theme music: Dunn, Dunn, Dunn!
I love the reversal of a mouse scaring a cat and the the idea of a mouse magician. Enchanting and intriguing.
‘re the ongoing camera debate… during the initial bout of late night screeching Burt set up a live feed to the tree… I imagine we are watching that feed
Also, consider that it’s an owl saying that “Who.”!
–Dave, will parse subtleties for food
Kimberly, they weren’t band-aids on her bum as i thought too at first, they are her little legs crossed
I just wanted to say that I too read BCN on my GoComics feed in the morning, and then go to the GoComics BCN page and the BCN Website and Twitter feed later to read the comments, as there is always some little touch or meaning that I missed. Then of course I have to read the comic again :)!
OMG! Baba’s selfie on Twitter! LOVE! I don’t belong to Twitter, so I had to express my love here.
Kimberly, I think those are her little pink feet, not band-aids…
I am on pins and, needles waiting for the next episode.
Emily, thank you for suggesting this for Georgia – now I want to look into them!! ~ Victoria
love those little mousie feets!
Many things which people think are stylish serve no other purpose. That doesn’t make them bad. *shrug*
More Cats!!!!
That’s it, I’m going to have to break down and join twitter.
Yeah, I did that on Friday. Following ONLY BCN.
I think Agnes IS the Golden Mouse / has the powers of the Golden Mouse. Agnes and Alice are sisters, Alice just told Wicket she’s descended from the Golden Mouse (so is Agnes), and Agnes is golden-coloured.
I’m desperately hoping for a “Sunday With ” strip today. Be that somebody Alice, or Baba Mouse, or the boys, or or or…
“I am The Great and Powerful Alice!” 🙂
Quinapalus, the mustache serves plenty of purpose – it’s very expressive, and combined with the owl’s eyes it conveys a world of character. Georgia is an expert at using small elements to show a depth of character unusual for a “mere” cartoon. (Unless you were quoting something obscure, in which case, never mind)
Oh boy, lots happening, I have not been checking for a while, everything is taking a whole for me to catch up!!!
