I hope everyone has a terrific Fourth today! I have some sad news, my grandmother passed away yesterday. We were close and I am terribly sad to have lost her. I am grateful for the long, healthy life she had before just a couple of months ago. I’m thankful that she got to see the BCN book and read the comic in print, as she was a huge fan of comics. Some of her favorites were ‘Family Circle,’ ‘Hagar the Horrible,’ and ‘Frank and Ernest.’ Even as I type this, her refrigerator is covered with comic strips she carefully clipped out of newspapers and taped to the door for a laugh whenever she was getting out a Diet Coke. My Mom and my Nana had the biggest hands in raising me, and I could not have asked for two better people in my life growing up and through adulthood. I’m shattered; Nana was the best parts of Baba Mouse and Winifred Quinn, and I think she is a big reason that I absolutely have a need to put heroic, hilarious, capable older women characters into everything.
I may be traveling later in the week, but actually, the comic should continue posting on time, as I’m a bit ahead on these strips, and painting is a great comfort to me in sad times.
In the meantime, she loved the Fourth of July and we’re doing our best today to celebrate it with good food and a lot of games and cuddles with our children and the cats. She loved both so much. I hope that everyone has a fantastic day, and if your grandparents are still with you, give them a hug from me!
I am so sorry about your grandmother. I’m glad that your art helps, but if you need to take a break, most of us will understand. Take care of yourself in this time.
My deepest condolences on your loss. May the memories of the years of love and shared laughter bring you solace.
Wishing peace and comfort to all who loved and will miss her. I am so very sorry.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Georgia. My mother, in March of this year, celebrated her 100th birthday, and I realize how blessed I am that she is still around. She has been able to see the oldest of her great grandchildren graduate college. You and I both can look back over the years and the memories we have of our loved ones alive and gone. I hope the services for your grandmother are good ones.
Dear Georgia,
We have all experienced some kind of loss,
My Great-Grandma Ruth Passed away in 2010 She would’ve turned 100 this year!
My dearest sympathies, Georgia.
My deepest sympathies, Georgia. I have been where you are many times and have learned to take comfort in happy memories and the love of friends and family. I wish you safe travels and comfort.
Georgia, I am so sorry for your loss. Your grandmother must have been an amazing woman to have produced such an amazing granddaughter. I know she will live on in your memories. Thank you for sharing her with us through your creations.
I’m so very sorry for your loss. Be strong for the little ones; hold them (and your fuzzy children) close and tell them stories about Great-Grandmother. If we remember and speak of our loved ones, they’re never truly gone.
(My Mother passed last February and the Minister said this at the service. It’s made me feel better, I hope it can do the same for you.)
I am so sorry to read about your loss. My sincerest condolences.
I could be wrong but I believe you said it was your grandmother who didn’t have a computer, which made the BCN book all the more special, as she would be able to see your comic. All I can think is how wonderful that the timing worked out so well.
I am so sorry for your loss. I have no words that can ease your pain, but hope your memories of her will comfort you and your family. She lives on in your hearts.
Hugs and Prayers Georgia…I know she was and is so proud of the legacy she has left behind in her wonderful granddaughter…Thank you for sharing all that you do with us….
Georgia, I am so sorry. Your grandmother sounds like such a wonderful person. I hope you get good time with family to both celebrate her life and mourn her loss.
Georgia, I’m terribly sorry to hear this sad news . . . at least your grandmother got to see your BCN work! If she inspired Baba Mouse and Winifred Quinn, that’s why those are such rich characters.
I think everyone in this crowd understands the need to attend to other business will be very forgiving with any potential breaks . . . you should take whatever time you need.
I am very sorry for your loss, Georgia – she must have been so incredibly proud of all you achieved and the beautiful children and cats you are raising.
So sorry to hear your sad news. You have my sympathy. Your Grandmother will forever remain in your heart.
Happy Fourth of July to you and your family. Let Lupin, Puck and Elvis share a hamburger patty on me! ;-D
I really enjoy reading your BCN comic strip. KUTGW.
Geogia, your post made me sad and happy. I enjoy reading your blogs when you share tidbits of yourself. You and your family are truly blessed. Great comic today!
Paula and I grieve with you on the loss of your grandmother…we’ve lost all of ours–and all but one of our parents, too. But we’ve learned to accept those losses after many years…and eventually moved to fond remembrances of the good times with them…”there may be pain in the night, but joy comes in the morning”–may joy come to your morning soon, lovely lady! And the strip continues to get better and better, too!
Sorry for your loss if your loss. Grandmother’s are so important in our lives, and she got to see you blossom in your wonderful talents. I’m so grateful to my husband for telling me about BCN. ((((Georgia))))
I’m so, so sorry for your loss, Georgia. Your Nana sounds like she was a wonderful woman who left a tremendous legacy of love and humour behind. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Georgia, my deepest condolences for your loss. I hope the happy memories of the good times with your grandmother will help to comfort you in your sorrow.
OMC, this is so hilarious! Is the Beautiful Cat Maiden waving or shaking her fist? And “will return…To have the last screech”? Brilliant! Thanks for making my day! (And please have a glorious 4th of July!)
I’m so sorry for you loss, Georgia–the comments didn’t display when I read the strip. I’m glad you have such great memories of her and know they will bring you joy.
So sad for your loss, Georgia. Take comfort in that the best of what was in our departed loved ones is always with us and helping to make us better persons throughout our lives.
Dear Georgia the loss of a beloved family member is always so hard, but we can only rejoice that we had them in our lives for whatever length of time. I am so glad she had time to see great grand children and to witness the success of a special granddaughter (you). I’m sure she was a true inspiration to you, and was probably delighted to be a part of Baba Mouse! Hold her memory close and be kind to your self. Hugs!
So sorry for your loss, Georgia – your grandmother sounds like a wonderful person, and she must have been so proud of you. My condolences to you and your family.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope the memories of good times with your grandmother sustain you and your family through this difficult time. With all the caring you do for others, please make sure to make some time for yourself. I will be keeping you and your family in my heart.
We are all fireworks, burning brightly for a time. The best that we can hope is that someone will say ‘That one is my favorite.’ Take all the time you need. Best wishes.
I’m sorry for your loss. It’s probably not any comfort, really, but this strip is outstanding. I love that you were able to adopt a different art style for the legend. 🙂
I am sorry to hear about your grandmother. But I have to say: the medieval styling you put on the artwork associated with the Tale of Clover, son of Gumdrop (or maybe the Rodentbury Tale?) is really something special. Very nice touch.
I am sorry for your loss. Yesterday was the 5 year anniversary of my Mother’s death. She would have been 81 this year. She was also a lover of cats and comics. I think she would have loved BCN and the book.
Georgia, I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother. I have lost enough people who were close to me to know that grief is a very personal process that no one can completely share and I know that no one can say or do anything to make it “all better.” That being said, grief /is/ made a little easier when you are able share it with others. Your online fans are part of your (very) extended family. We are here to help you through this time, admittedly in a small way, but every little bit helps.
Now, from a purely selfish point of view, I am greatly relieved that not only are you ahead in producing the strips, but you prefer to keep busy with painting and drawing while working through this hard time. I know that I wanted to keep busy and have life as “normal” as possible when I lost loved ones. But, as many people have already pointed out in the comments, the vast majority of us would have no problem with waiting if you did need to take time off.
Today’s strip is among your best. There are times when I laugh out loud at the first panel, occasionally just from reading the headline (i.e. There’s a Button under the Computer Desk that Makes the Man Scream). I did not expect today’s to be one of those. I was anxious to find out what was happening to Alice, what Natasha was talking about and so on. I try very hard not to read these too quickly, so on the first panel I read the dialog, scanned the artwork to see if there were any hidden gems and finally, read the scroll. When I got to “MOUSTACHE SERVES NO PURPOSE,” I laughed quite loudly. It still makes me chuckle just to think about it. Wonderful!
Couple of questions: Where did Tommy find such a tiny handkerchief to offer Agnes? It looks like Beatrice has gone to the home of the Robber Mice “to view the tapestries”, have you told us where that is yet? Finally, are there no male mice in this universe? In panel six, all the mice appear to be wearing dresses.
Thank you Georgia, for all the happiness you have given us with your art, we look forward to much more. As much as we can be, we are with you in this sad time.
Am I a bad person in that I hoped Wicket would do in the Robber Mice? I don’t like them; I was hoping you were using this as a way of writing them out of the strip.
Umm, that should be Beatrix. Thought I proofed that before posting.
Also, looks like Beatrix answered one of my questions. On Twitter, she says she’s reporting from the farm house attic. Looks like that’s where the Robber Mice live.
I am so very sorry to hear this sad news. Your grandmother sounds like she was one of a kind, and I hope that it eases things a bit to know she was able to enjoy your book (Yay! My granddaughter the published author !!!). The above comments make it obvious that you have a lot of love and support coming at you, and please take whatever time you need-don’t worry about the strip, I bet we all understand. Hang in there !
Sorry for your loss, Georgia. At least you can keep her as live through Baba Mouse and Winifred Quinn. I too feel that work is The best antidote for grief…but should you need time we will still be here for you.
I sympathize with you for the loss of your “Baba” I have said farewell to both parents, an aunt, an uncle and a cousin. After a while the pain fades and you remember mostly the good times.
Hold your family close this 4th. I hope the cats don’t freak out because of the fireworks. We have had loud cannon crackers going off locally for several nights. Fortunately Her Rotundity doesn’t panic but every BOOM gets a head swivel, ears pricked WHAT WAS THAT? reaction.
Lots of love, prayers and healing to you, Georgia, and all of your beautiful family. There are so many of us out there who love you and I know you can feel that from all of the heartfelt messages you are getting. Blessings!
“Moustache serves no purpose” is right! My husband has had a moustache since he was nineteen. Kissing someone with a moustache is like kissing a toothbrush.
I am so sorry for your loss. Your grandmom sounds like a wonderful lady.
With her love of the comic I’m sure you made her very proud with your strip and book. She will always be with you. I love your strips and take all the time you need to grieve and resume when you are ready.
So sorry to hear of your loss, Georgia. But how wonderful that she was able to enjoy so much of your life–family, cats, comic. And you have so many wonderful memories to pass down to your children.
Sorry for your loss Georgia. My Grandmother was wonderful and I still miss her. I am grateful that we had so much time together. I hope your memories consol you.
Georgia, so sorry to read of your grandmother’s death. I empathize with the loss, having lost one of my fur babies and learned of the untimely deaths of two friends within the last 4 weeks. Thank you for continuing to bring so much laughter and joy into what can sometimes be a difficult world.
Georgia, I echo everyone’s sentiments and have been there myself. My paternal grandmother outlived my parents and my other three grandparents by many years. When she died in 2007, I honestly felt like I’d lost my third parent.
Just so glad that she was able to see your work in print and to know what a success you are as both a mother and an artist. She obviously had a huge influence on your life. There’s no better gift for a grandmother than to know you have imparted something of worth to a beloved grandchild.
As to the story….i await with bated breath but urge you to take the time you need to absorb this loss and pay tribute to a wonderful lady.
Georgia, I just returned from vacation and have been catching up on your strips. I am so sorry to hear of your grandmother’s passing; may the memories you have of her help ease your pain.
First of all, I would like to express my deepest sympathy for Georgia in this difficult time. I am sure your Nana was very proud of you.
Now as to the mice all wearing dresses thing, I have come up with two possible explainations:
1) The tapestry is the mousy equivalent of a medeival depiction of biblical times, so they’re wearing robes.
2) The mice have a matrilineal society (unlike our partrilineal one), so the “medeival” mice were likely to prominently depict far more females in crowds than males.
My condolences, Georgia. I lost my grandmother this Christmas (Dec. 23) and I know how awful it is. Especially when you were close. What a blessing that your book came out in time for her to read! Tell lots of stories about her to the wee ones.
Ah, and we earlier saw Clover, son of Gumdrop, guinea-penning his History! (in ‘a Brief History of Mouse and Wicket’)
Nice to see the same story from a different perspective. I think the mice are all female, because Mouse Society is a matriarchy.
My condolences on your loss, Georgia. If she’s at the Rainbow Bridge, she’s likely smothered by various Fur-Persons, all asking “what took you so long? Pet me!”
Georgia, and family; my sincerest condolences to you. May God bless and keep you as you travel back and forth. Prayers for your family during this time of grief.
Georgia, I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my Nana at 101 three years ago and I still wasn’t ready for her to leave me behind. I am so glad that she was able to see the incredible talent that she helped nurture come to fruition in your book. Rebecca W here is right, tell her stories to the wee ones, and write them down, if you already haven’t, and keep them handy to read and remember as you grieve. Add to them as others share their stories with you. Do not worry about the broadcasts, we are a patient and loyal fan base and will welcome you back with open arms when you are ready. Family always first!
So very sorry for your loss. How wonderful that you think of your Nana with such love and gratefulness for the time you had together. ‘Til you meet again.
I’m so sorry, Georgia, to hear that your grandma died. I know she was a great influence in your life. I have fond memories of my Monka, as we called her, and even though 48 years have passed since she died, I still think of the things she and my sister and I did when she took care of us when my Mom was hospitalized. Love to you and your family.
Georgia, my condolences to you and your family. Your grandmother must have been truly wonderful and remarkable. It’s heartwarming to know that she was able to see, hold and read your first book. She must have been so proud of you. Your tribute to her said it all – no one could be better than the best of Winifred Quinn and Baba Mouse.
Georgia, our condolences to you and your family. We all, including the two fuzzy kat kids, send our thoughts. Do take what time you need, all of BCN-ers understand. Yours sounds amazing, and who wouldn’t want to be a combination of Winifred Quinn and Baba Mouse! So glad she was able to meet your children, including the book!
I’m just catching up on this, and I’m crying with delight at the epic tale of the Golden Mouse. I love how you shifted your style to look like something from a medieval manuscript. I wish I had the time to embroider this like the Bayeux Tapestry. This whole story is wonderful.
Also, please accept my condolences on your loss. I wrote my review immediately after reading the comic, and didn’t see your note. I still remember the pain of losing my maternal grandmother, who helped raise me. I’m gratified she got to see her great grandchildren and your book before she passed. I know she must have been incredibly proud of you. Please continue to create kick-ass “old lady” characters, the world needs more of them.
Oh my, this just gets better and better. I can hardly wait until the next episode.
I hope everyone has a terrific Fourth today! I have some sad news, my grandmother passed away yesterday. We were close and I am terribly sad to have lost her. So sad for your loss, Georgia. Take comfort in that the best of what was in our departed loved ones is always with us and helping to make us better persons throughout our lives.
I, too send my condolences. I’m 73 and know from personal experience that a long healthy life is what we all hope we have.
The story continues to intrigue me and I wonder how angry Baba Mouse is going to be when she finds out what Wicket has been up to.
So sorry for your loss Georgia and family xx Take what time you need. We’ll be here for you. We don’t just love you for your awesome art 💗
So sorry for your loss Georgia, our thoughts are with you and your family.
Georgia, there are no words. But I offer hugs if you want them.
As to the strip–hurrah for the Golden Mouse and boo, hiss on the Wicked.
Clover, son of Gumdrop is perfect! I love this style of art!
Many condolences on your grandmother. I’m sure she was and is proud of you.
This is amazing! I love your ancient tapestry art style for the legend. 🙂
Oh my cat! This story is … wait for it … LEGENDARY!
Love the scroll:
Claws for Scratching-Beak Bites-Moustache Serves No Purpose
Hah!
Sincere condolences on the loss of your grandmother Georgia. I’m happy she was able to see your work. [And this latest adventure is a hoot.]
Deepest sympathy for the loss of your Nana, but how fitting that she inspired Baba Mouse, whose story is just beginning to be told.
Dear Georgia the loss of a beloved family member is always so hard, but we can only rejoice that we had them in our lives for whatever length of time. I am so glad she had time to see great grand children and to witness the success of a special granddaughter (you). Hugs to you and your family.
Blessings to you and your family, Georgia.
I may be too much of a Doctor Who fam but all I can think of in panel 10 is the Sisters of Plenitude from the episode _New Earth_.
YES!
So sorry for your loss, Georgia – your grandmother sounds like a wonderful person, and she must have been so proud of you. My condolences to you and your family.
So sorry for your loss. Remember the good times.
Georgia,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I hope the memories of good times with your grandmother sustain you and your family through this difficult time. With all the caring you do for others, please make sure to make some time for yourself. I will be keeping you and your family in my heart.
I am so sorry for your loss. Take whatever time you may need. Your Nana had a long, interesting life from what you’ve said here.
I am so sorry about your grandmother. I’m glad you have such good memories of her.
This story arc is amazing. I feel so invested in all the characters and what happens next!
I am so sorry to learn of your loss. No matter how long, there is never enough time with those we love.
Deepest condolences to you and yours, Georgia. I’m sure your Nana was proud of all the joy you’ve brought to us with BCN. Thank yo again.

So sorry to hear your grandmother has passed. Take all the time you need to heal yourself.

I adore the olde worlde, medievale drawings. They are so compelling and yet so wierde.
So sorry about your Grandmother – no surprise she has appeared in the comic !

Loved the tapestry art, especially the calligraphied “Ha Ha.” ❤️
It seems I am in debt to your Grandmother for your love of comics, without which we mightn’t have Breaking Cat News.
I am so sorry for your loss.
Condolances on your loss – but amazed at how your story goes on. It’s wonderful to read the historical annals of the mice!
So sorry for your loss. Sending Aussie e-hugs.
So sorry to hear of your loss, Georgia. But how wonderful that she was able to enjoy so much of your life–family, cats, comic. And you have so many wonderful memories to pass down to your children.
I join you in grieving today. My fur baby Perkins went to the Rainbow Bridge this morning. Embrace the memory and carry her spirit with you always!
I’m so sorry, Mary. 🙁
I’m so sorry to hear that! It’s always hard when a furbaby goes to Rainbow Bridge. I’m sure Perkins had a good, happy life with you.
*gives hugs*
So sorry for your loss, Georgia.
My condolences on the loss of your grandma.
The headline “WANTED” would have been “UNWANTED” if Baba Mouse were a BCN writer!
So many condolences, Georgia. If you need time away from the comic, don’t worry about us. Though in my experience, staying busy really helps. *hugs*
I’m sure she had a long, happy life.
I am sorry for your loss. My best to you and yours.
My condolences, Georgia. I lost my grandmother this Christmas (Dec. 23) and I know how awful it is. Especially when you were close. What a blessing that your book came out in time for her to read! Tell lots of stories about her to the wee ones.
I am so sorry for your loss. Your story about your grandmother is so sweet and touching and I am so glad she got to see your book.
I so love your comic strip. I lost my father earlier this year and BCN has been a real comfort and joy to me.
I am sorry for your loss as well. I’m glad the comic has been able to offer you some comfort.
Pet me!”
And I’ve just GOT to add, I love the gothic “Ha Ha” in panel 9!
Loving the Bayeux (or should I say Meyeaux (meow)) Tapestry style stuff.
My condolences.

So sorry to hear this. Thoughts are with your family! <3
Getting a huge Redwall vibe here.
So very sorry for your loss. How wonderful that you think of your Nana with such love and gratefulness for the time you had together. ‘Til you meet again.
Georgia, I am so sorry for the loss of your Nana. You and your family are in my thoughts!
I’m so sorry for your loss, Georgia.
