Hello everyone! We celebrated Baby’s first birthday last weekend, and it felt like a fun chance to give the team a “blue carpet” event to cover! Can you believe she is one already? Where did this year ago? Baby’s real name is Guinevere; we call her Gwen for short. Gwen loves to dance, hand us toys, clap her hands, and she can nod her head for yes and shake her head no. She is a delight!
On Monday some folks went on Twitter to search for the account Beatrix set up for the BCN Cat Network News team… And YES, it IS real! The BCN station Twitter account is @breakingcatnews. Beatrix maintains the account for the team as the newly appointed social media intern! If you’re on Twitter, please follow us for station updates and occasional behind-the-scenes tweets!
A few folks (Elvis) were wondering if there’s a way to read the account without a twitter. I believe you can read it here: https://twitter.com/breakingcatnews or by clicking the “Find us on Twitter” box on the right side of this page. I hope that works to read it, I could be wrong. Beatrix is much better with these things than the rest of us in the studio! Some readers posted links to read the account though, and I believe that one works.
It’s late here in America, so I will bid you goodnight, Americans! Good morning, UK/European folks! And well wishes to the rest of the world! I hope everyone has a great day!
So fun! Love Elvis – so protective of his Baby! And the Robber Mice Girls – all fancy in their party dresses! Great job once again, Georgia – definitely worth the wait! Happy birthday, Gwen!
Thanks for the great strip, Georgia. I loved that Elvis jumped right in there to protect the baby from the candle. Then, in the last panel, the Man comments that it is usually Lupin that goes after candles while he holds his cupcake out and Lupin is ready to leap.
I’m doing a little “wandering”, and reading this for the, um, 8th time? More? Less? …. lots, anyway.
JUST NOTICED a BIG PAW Holding Lupin back!! Wish there was some way to comment directly to Georgia. Or at least to “quick scroll” the comments. I frequently read them, and don’t remember anyone mentioning that. Would like Georgia to know someone FINALLY caught that, IF it hasn’t been caught and commented already. I’m too tired to try to read them all to find out! Lol!! She is SO AWESOME with hidden details!!!
A vision in plaid??!! Yellow gown and oven mitts??!! TOO, too hilarious…
Anyway, congratulations on the increasing life in your life; may your children bring you nothing but blessings and joy and may you continue to be a source of wisdom and strength to them all. And, oh by the way, tell the Guy that he has much to be proud of.
Happy First Birthday Gwen!!! And Elvis is correct, the fanfare is flammable. I half expected Baby to want to pat the kitten… that’s all I wanted to do at her age ( according to my family).
How wonderful to wake up to such a gala event! So many really cool and touching things happening at once. l always feel for Elvis when he has the look of sheer horror on his face, and the joy on Lupin’s face is quite contagious:) such a sweet face on the baby. I don’t know how you manage to pack so much warmth and happiness in to one cartoon, but I’m sure glad you do! Happy Birthday to Gwen! I hope it’s magical☺️
Nice to see how protective Elvis is of her… and I love Lupin in that last panel. And even the robber mice are getting in on the party… bringing gifts to cover their birthday cake crime spree, no doubt!
What a fun strip today !! The boys look so suave and the ladies (robber mice included) so elegant. And the “ghostly” toddler had me laughing out loud !! Happy Birthday Gwen !! 😺
😀 Many happy returns of the day to Baby Gwen! 😀 How exciting! And everyone looks marvelous, especially Gwen! And I think the Man has some excellent taste–I love to wear plaid t-shirts (having been a teen in the 90s I never quite grew out of the fashion) 😉 Poor Elvis, he looks like he’s going to burst a blood vessel worrying about the fanfare catching flame! I love it when Sophie comes out, she’s such a darling. <3
Thank you so very much, Georgia, for sharing this incredible world you’ve created with all of us. This has been the first thing to successfully make me not only smile, but laugh aloud – actually I giggled and then… snortgled is the only way to describe it lol – since I received ‘the Call’ earlier in the week from my oncologist about alarming test results. I’m am so incredibly grateful that BCN exists to make me laugh, or go awwwww with cuteness, to feel a little lighter when the world is less generous with its kindness. Words truly aren’t enough for how much it means to me so all I can say is thank you, yet again.
This strip is one of my favorites! To have the entire BCN team covering the gala event of little Gwen’s First Birthday, was absolutely hysterical – Puck’s “the Man is a vision in plaid” had me nearly crying with laughter, and Protector!Elvis’ “All this fanfare is flammable!” had me choking on my coffee lol Yet another brilliant strip, great job!
Everything I have tried to write (and then erased and tried to write again) does not seem to word well enough just how happy I am that the comic is making you laugh and how absolutely crushed I am to read about your results, Christina. I’m so sorry. I’m glad the boys can offer their funny selves right now, and entertain you with their kitty antics!
Happy Birthday, Gwen!! You are an adorable little treasure! And Luke is such a very good big brother you should give him another piece of cake. grin. (and yeah, we haven’t had a real candle over here in years, lol.)
The Robber Mice come bearing gifts, and the Toddler is applying all the dignity older siblings tend to at that age to the situation. And the kitten is, of course, enjoying the decorations. Just love it!
Christina,
From someone who has been in the same position I wish you the best. It may sound odd but, while it’s not an easy road, you will find some wonderful and amazing travelling companions along the way. Save travels.
I am honored to be invited to witness such a grand gala red carpet event! Happy birthday, Gwen. Hope she had fun. Did the cats help her unwrap her presents? My cats have always loved ribbon and crunchy paper — I mean tissue.
Happy Birthday Gwen from myself, and grandma’s two cats.
As I write this, I’m please to say I just now started a new career in life.
I’m a cat of adventure heh. Speaking of whom, burnt kitty fur isn’t a fun sight or smell.. Remember that Elvis and Lupin
And thank you to everyone who mentioned the Robber Mice in their comment; I appreciate the alert as I always seem to miss them the first time around. 🙂
The link works on my kindle.
I just tapped the link and ta da 🙂
I only read the headlines so don’t know if everything works as it should.
love the headline newsfeeds. I will definitely be checking in often.
Looks like my post at 5 AM on my I-Pad did not post so I’ll say Happy Birthday, Gwen, the year flew by. Another great strip filled with so much great detail. I love the boys in their tuxes and the Man as a vision in plaid!
I love that even the mice are gowned. Tommys tuxedo is so him as well! Happy birthday Gwen. Her birthday dress is so pretty. And spooooky toddler is adorable too.
How lovely. Congratulations and best wishes to your whole family, I also feel like it was yesterday and remember the ” coming home with the baby” day, thanks for all the happy times, it was a great day when I found this cartoon xxx
I can’t believe it’s been a whole year! Love the blue carpet report, and hope there will be others in the future. Fully on board with oven mitts as the next big thing in fashion accessories. Marvelous strip.
*squee!* everyone looks so nice!
I am very surprised to see how many of you folks still use candles – I gave away all my candles when the first cat came to stay. Imagined a flaming cat running wildly around, curtains, under the bed, behind the furnace, yikes. Not worth it.
Fortunately, flaming cats seem to put themselves out quickly when they start to run. Found that out from a stove misjudgment years ago. And I haven’t had lighted candles since the first cats moved in.
Ha! Coincidence of all coincidences! My family has a lot of April birthdays, too. Me and my brother celebrated our birthday on Monday, our aunt had one today, and our niece is turning five next Wednesday. Tell our fellow Ares baby happy birthday for me!
Us too!! Toddler’s birthday is next Friday and we are celebrating tomorrow! And my mother’s birthday is at the end of the month! April is a great month for birthdays!
Denny – I think you’re right! I see a big furry paw, some brown cheek fur, and a black-tipped ear in back of Lupin! Georgia, you are so clever! Oh and also, happy birthday baby girl Gwen!
I had a cat named Isolde — a Siamese, extremely vocal. I also had a cat named Gwenevere, only for some perverse reason I insisted on the archaic spelling, Gwenhwyvar, which the vet’s office could neither pronounce nor spell. Happy birthday, Gwen.
Happy Birthday to dear little Gwen!
May your whole family have many more birthdays filled with such joy and silly fun courtesy of the boys and their antics.
Everything about this strip is simply ‘purrfect’. 😉
I don’t have a GoComics account, so I’ll ask here. I notice BCN is now appearing every day on GoComics. Are they doing that in order to catch up with this website?
Yes! That is something I decided to do, with input from my editor on GoComics. I really wanted to get the sites in sync and she suggested that I run them every day to catch them up. I am both excited and a little anxious to be truly “live” on both sites sometime in the summer!
He is turning three! I can’t believe it. And yes, that is coming up soon in the comic (light spoiler, ha!) Eventually I plan to call Baby and Toddler “the Boy” and “the Girl,” or else I run into having two “the Toddlers,” and later two “the Child.”
One already? Wow, it feels like last month that she was born! Congrats to the birthday toddler.
The ever protective Elvis. Love the tuxes on the boys. And, what better than Tommy in a pink tux. Only a real man cat could pull that off.

Thank you Georgia! 😀
Happy birthday, Gwen! That’s a great name – in fact, I also named my cat Guinevere (Gwen for short). Her sister is called Isolde (Izzy for short).
Is Lupin interested in candles in real life too?
Yes, he is! Ha! We’re very, VERY careful to keep him away from them in real life. And I love the name Isolde too, great names!!
N.B. Georgia’s daughter is not a cat. Probably.
(Gwen and Izzy, love it!)
So fun! Love Elvis – so protective of his Baby! And the Robber Mice Girls – all fancy in their party dresses! Great job once again, Georgia – definitely worth the wait! Happy birthday, Gwen!
U.K. Here where we are overcome with excitement.
Happy 1st birthday Gwen. What a fabulous blue carpet event!
Happy birthday baby!
i may never stop laughing at the spooooooky toddler. 😀
Happy birthday to the littlest! Can’t believe it’s been a year already!
The man is a vision in plaid, ha, ha. And the beloved Sophie looks darling in her dress. 🙂 genius as always
Happy Birthday Gwen!
I fear for anyone who makes The Baby upset while in Elvis’s view. He is a fierce protector.
Thank goodness Elvis is always vigilant. Someone has to protect the baby! Lol! Happy birthday to the sweet little girl!
Best wishes,
M.
Atticus is obsessed with candles and trying to catch the flame. Thankfully he’s never tried to dive into my stove!!
Wow, Sophie with a microphone in her hand! That was a treat.
Happy birthday Gwen! I hope your boys are raising your properly as a nearly-cat.
Thanks for the great strip, Georgia. I loved that Elvis jumped right in there to protect the baby from the candle. Then, in the last panel, the Man comments that it is usually Lupin that goes after candles while he holds his cupcake out and Lupin is ready to leap.

The man better watch out, the baby’s about to not have her birthday cupcake!
A vision in plaid??!! Yellow gown and oven mitts??!! TOO, too hilarious…

I had to go back to look for the robber mice after someone mentioned them in a comment. Love their party dresses and teeny tiny gifts!
Happy 1st birthday Gwen!
Great story as always. Can’t believe that Gwen is one already. Elvis protecting her is so sweet and he is losing his grouchy status.
Thank you for the info about Gwen, she seems so sweet.
Happy First Birthday Gwen!!! And Elvis is correct, the fanfare is flammable. I half expected Baby to want to pat the kitten… that’s all I wanted to do at her age ( according to my family).

Happy Birthday Gwen, and I see the Robber Mice Ladies are attending, and oooh protective kitties. I’m glad they love her and want to protect her .
Happy Birthday to the Baby! I remember when you were just a bump in your Mom’s tummy and meant no new updates for a month. But I forgive you. 😉
happy happy Gwen!
Nice to see how protective Elvis is of her… and I love Lupin in that last panel. And even the robber mice are getting in on the party… bringing gifts to cover their birthday cake crime spree, no doubt!
I think you mean, MEWly appointed social media intern!
(:P)

Aww…happy birthday to your little lady! Beatrix looks adorable in a dress; and the boys all look so handsome in their tuxedos!
My cat, Nessa, loves candles, too. She has singed her whiskers at least twice sticking her face too close to the flame. Cats…
A yellow gown and oven mitts made me lol.
Happy Birthday, Gwen!!!1!
Happy Birthday, Gwen!! You are an adorable little treasure! And Luke is such a very good big brother you should give him another piece of cake. grin. (and yeah, we haven’t had a real candle over here in years, lol.)
Is Beatrix about to grab Lupin in the last panel? I think I see one of her many-toed paws there.
Yes, that works fine. I’m away from my main computer, so not logged into Twitter, and it works well for me.
Congrats to Gwen, and I love your work.
Love the Robber Mouse bringing a present for Gwen.
Wow! It’s been a year already? Where does the time go?
Love that this was a “blue carpet event,” as everyone’s first birthday should be. 😊
The Robber Mice come bearing gifts, and the Toddler is applying all the dignity older siblings tend to at that age to the situation. And the kitten is, of course, enjoying the decorations. Just love it!
Happy Birthday, Gwen!

And, can I just say, Tommy’s wearing pants!
I am honored to be invited to witness such a grand gala red carpet event! Happy birthday, Gwen. Hope she had fun. Did the cats help her unwrap her presents? My cats have always loved ribbon and crunchy paper — I mean tissue.
They did, actually!! Elvis took over a gift bag filled with tissue paper for much of the afternoon and following evening!
My foggy brain registered that as ‘A yellow gown and evening mitts.’
Georgia, this strip is visually gorgeous and funny as always. I love how Elvis protects his Baby from the traditional gift of fire.
And thank you to everyone who mentioned the Robber Mice in their comment; I appreciate the alert as I always seem to miss them the first time around. 🙂
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Gwendolyn,
Happy birthday, to youuuuu!
Jingle Belle pointed out the name is Guenevere, not Gwendolyn, Ooops!
Happy first, little Gwen!
Thank you!!!!
Wow, so much extra-festive color and detail in this one! Gorgeous!
And hilarious as always! Elvis’s freak out made me laugh so hard.
Happy birthday to the little sprite 🙂
Happy Birthday, Baby!
Don’t let Elvis block your candle…you need to blow it out for good luck.
I love BCN, Georgia. Great job!
seems like just yesterday you were leaving for the hospital.
There can’t be enough fanfare indeed.
Happy Birthday Gwen.
The link works on my kindle.
I just tapped the link and ta da 🙂
I only read the headlines so don’t know if everything works as it should.
love the headline newsfeeds. I will definitely be checking in often.
Say Congrats! to the baby for me Georgia.
Christina
thanks for sharing the news with us about receiving The Call from your doctor.
sending you a hug and many extra hugs to be used as needed.
Looks like my post at 5 AM on my I-Pad did not post so I’ll say Happy Birthday, Gwen, the year flew by. Another great strip filled with so much great detail. I love the boys in their tuxes and the Man as a vision in plaid!
I just LOVE that Elvis is so protective of the baby!! BTW, has her hair gotten lighter in this strip? I thought she had black hair like her Daddy!!
It has! In real life she was born with black hair like Daddy, and over the year it has lightened. 🙂
Y’know, there isn’t another comic cast I’d rather be outdressed by.
At the mention of ghosts, I was picturing Tillie floating above the celebration.
Happy Birthday, Gwen!
I love that even the mice are gowned. Tommys tuxedo is so him as well! Happy birthday Gwen. Her birthday dress is so pretty. And spooooky toddler is adorable too.
Sorry! Safe travels not save travels.
Wow, a year old already? Time sure does fly! Happy Birthday Gwen – and kudos to Elvis for keeping her safely away from that FIRE!
Hey Georgia, is that a *pink* carnation that Puck is wearing with his *white sports coat*?
Haha!! It’s meant to be red, but for the song it can be pink!
I read that all wrong to begin with…..
The baby is turning one what? Ah…
Camera One?
My own BCN Team ( Dillinger, Diva, Pandora and Athena ) want to wish the Baby a Blessed Birthday!
*squee!* everyone looks so nice!
I am very surprised to see how many of you folks still use candles – I gave away all my candles when the first cat came to stay. Imagined a flaming cat running wildly around, curtains, under the bed, behind the furnace, yikes. Not worth it.

From a Welshman, Gwendolyn means blessed and she certainly is. As are we with her presence in our BCN universe.
Me too. I think that may be the pooffiest puffy Elvis tail we’ve ever seen!
Oh my gosh, I just saw the first book date and I realized that it’s SOOOOO close! So excited!😄
I’m almost tempted to let my cat Tweet just to cover the Omaha area of BCN.
“JUST IN – I THINK I JUST ATE A JUNE BUG. WILL CONFIRM SHORTLY.”
Denny – I think you’re right! I see a big furry paw, some brown cheek fur, and a black-tipped ear in back of Lupin! Georgia, you are so clever! Oh and also, happy birthday baby girl Gwen!
Cin, I’d missed the ear and cheek. So that’s gotta be Bea.
Hi, Dorothy–nice to see your font again. LTNS–last time was years ago at alt.callahans.
And, not at all surprised your cat’s name was spelt the old way. 🙂
[to reference the webcomic xkcd] *citation needed*
[drat, tried to quote and it didn’t work] … but also lots of love for the ‘gift of fire’!
Happy Birthday to dear little Gwen!
May your whole family have many more birthdays filled with such joy and silly fun courtesy of the boys and their antics.
Everything about this strip is simply ‘purrfect’. 😉
Hello Georgia,
Is one of the robber mice laying down on top of the cake or is that a large cake piping design of some sort?
Just piping! It’s meant to be flowers and piping. 🙂
But is Natasha trying to make off with the Big Pink Cake? or what is she doing, posed like a ballerina that way?
I don’t have a GoComics account, so I’ll ask here. I notice BCN is now appearing every day on GoComics. Are they doing that in order to catch up with this website?
Yes! That is something I decided to do, with input from my editor on GoComics. I really wanted to get the sites in sync and she suggested that I run them every day to catch them up. I am both excited and a little anxious to be truly “live” on both sites sometime in the summer!
So glad I can see the comic again!
Isn’t “The Toddler” going to need a real name soon?
Soon he may be “The Boy,” following in the names of “The Man” and “The Woman.”
Ah! thanks for clearing that up Georgia. :^)
thanks love this strip
How old is the toddler turning? Will he grow into The Boy someday in the comic? 🙂
He is turning three! I can’t believe it. And yes, that is coming up soon in the comic (light spoiler, ha!) Eventually I plan to call Baby and Toddler “the Boy” and “the Girl,” or else I run into having two “the Toddlers,” and later two “the Child.”
What gift did Violet give the baby?? So much fun.
If I had to guess, I believe it would be cheese related! (Mice love cheese and Baby loves cheese!)
Georgia, planning to buy several copies of the new book to give to fellow cat-lovers. Do you benefit more from one site versus another?
Thank you for considering this! And asking me this! As far as I know, it is the same through each site.
I love how you get that different viewpoint. Your BCN cats are not simply humans with fur.
I would, of course, be careful, so I do not think of fire and fanfare being much of an issue, but then, I am one of those possibly-insane humans.
Happy birthday to Gwen.
I love love love seeing Sophie with a microphone!
can we expect Sophie to cover the red carpet fashions during award season?
Followed, and tweeted you a picture of a beautiful deaf cat from where I volunteer. Hey, maybe someone from here will come adopt her, right? 😉
Also, if anyone wants to see some sporatic live stream of adoptable kitties in the LA area, follow musicandpastry on twitter, because I do that. ^_^
I just realized that Beatrix is holding back Lupin in the last panel.
It just occurred to me that so little of Beatrix is showing, because she refused to wear a party dress — just like Scout!
aw i love how protective elvis is
Happy 1st birthday, baby girl!!
Flammable fanfare! So funny!
Oh I adore Sophie.
