The Man has been groomed? It appears that The Man has been truly “groomed”by Elvis. I think that Puck might be on to something about hair length and balance in humans. Lol
Um … there are doorways of at least four different widths in just my house. And at the risk of veering into tmi territory, when the shape of my body changed a couple years ago, built-in doorway/obstacle margin-of-error feelers would have come in handy.
Love! The crawls *are* perfection. Do we know who writes them? Is it more Burt brilliance since he must be adding them to the feed, or just the staff in general?
I know Elvis was going for ‘cat’, but he did do a remarkable job producing ‘Wolverine’.
I know that having never grown my whiskers out has definitely negatively affected my vestibular system, particularly where spatial orientation is concerned. I don’t corner well with my own body, always managing to collide with things, and no matter how wide a doorway is, I will manage to bump into the frame.
Oh dear! I’ve been wondering about that myself! I can’t corner to save my life! Finally an answer! No whiskers! I’ll get right on that…well…um…ok, that might not work, being a girl and all! LMAO
Dearest Shellie,
Don’t know (and don’t WANT to know) your age, but after a certain number of bithdays, ladies sometimes start growing whiskers, alas! Miss Nina thinks mine would be elegant if they were long and even like hers, but short and prickly, not so much…
Well, Miss Elizabeth, I don’t know how many birthdays you have celebrated either. But I have known girls who started growing their whiskers a lot younger than I did. And I had a full beard when I was 20!
As teenage boys, we thought it was hilarious that a girl would have hairier arms and face than we did. Now, as the father of a teenage girl, and working with a whole lot of teenage girls, I realize to my shame that we were just mean little boys.
Wonderful, Georgia. I was wondering if the Man’s “New Look” was going to be a news story.
(By the Way, Georgia, I have to tell you that your Man is fairly unique; a guy that looks very handsome with long hair and a lot of beard AND just as handsome with short hair and a very trimmed beard. In my many (many) years of ‘guy watching’, I’ve seen very few who can pull off both looks)
ROTFL at work! Wasn’t fuzzy, was he (haven’t heard that in years), tail cut, hair today, gone tomorrow; love the crawls. Also very impressed with Elvis’ styling / grooming skills. He obviously cares about the man more than he is willing to let on. Thanks Georgia for a great start to a Monday!!
This certainly seems to herald a thawing of relations between Elvis and The Man. I too love the crawls on the bottom. “Wasn’t fuzzy, was he ? “. Brilliant use of mother goose rhymes (is that Mother Goose ? Childless, so have to rely on memory for that.)
Not Mother Goose…
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair,
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy,
Was he?
It’s a tongue twister, just as She sells sea shells at the seashore is.
Perfect, from the first crawl “wasn’t fuzzy, was he?” (a favourite saying of mine as a small child) to Elvis’s beautiful creation of The Man’s coiffure and the “oh wow” crawl! But my favourite has got to be “How does she know how wide doors are?” which judging by other commenters, is a favourite of many of us! Thanks as always, Georgia!
I got groomed yesterday (thankfully, my balance has not been affected by the 6 or 8 inch difference in my hair) but my guy Shadow looked at me when I got home like “who the heck are you and what did you do with my Mama?” So I understand Elvis’ consternation in the second panel.
LOL. Just love it. When you get older the “whiskers” will come out…..sadly I know this. And then we pluck them away. Oh my cat, what would they think of that!
Before chemo, my hair was hip-length. Now, I’m in & out of chemo so often I just keep it trimmed short when I’m not bald. My Greebo (tuxedo cat) who sleeps beside my pillow, has begun washing & styling my hair regularly. I think his style is somewhere between “impressionism” and “art deco”….
Awwww…what a sign of affection! I remember how our male cat would groom our son when he was around 3 yo. I would lay in bed with them at night and he would groom himself for a while and then “groom” my son. (He also liked to lick my eyebrows.) Maybe they know when someone needs extra love?
My hair is growing out from chemo. It’s just long enough now that, even without the cat’s help, it looks like a bad weather map when I first wake up. Can’t imagine what it would look like with the cat’s help!
I am guessing “Greebo” in named in tribute to Nanny Ogg’s cat in the Terry Pratchet’s “Diskworld” books – although I don’t think I would trust Nanny’s Greebo with my hair….or head….or any other part of my anatomy. Yours sounds like a lovely boy, though, Jill!
Didn’t it come from the nursery song “Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear.” then Fuzzy wuzzy lost his hair in a North Pole Barber Chair … so Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t very fuzzy was he? I think it came out in the late 40s or early 50s .. About the time of Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer. I remember my older sisters kids singing it.
As always great stuff Georgia!
Is Elvis a Flock of Seagulls fan? That is the vibe I’m getting after he “fixed” the man’s hair. Or maybe I’m just showing my age.
Oh! I must tell you that my brother’s family is in town staying with his in-laws. Every day when my 7 year old niece comes over, the first thing she says is, “can we read Cat News?” The same thing happened at Thanksgiving. As soon as we start reading them, her 11 year old brother takes his head out of whatever device he has and magically appears within viewing range of the strip. She LOVES to draw and last night she spontaneously started drawing Lupin holding a mic! Tonight I’ll try to share some of her work on your Facebook page. I’m a very proud aunt. π
Does this strip come from an actual grooming event between the man and Elvis? I ask because occasionally Gio, my Abby, tries to do the same thing to me..lol..Great strip as alwaysπ
Yes! Especially when the Man was “New” to Elvis and I, when we first got together in 2010. Elvis groomed the Man’s hair often like this! He still occasionally does this to his arms, lol, which are not very fuzzy, but seem to be a favorite nonetheless.
Aww…that’s how they put their familial scent on you when they decide to claim you as “part of the pride”…. I think Elvis was acknowledging that he accepted the man.
Chanur used to -insist- on getting into my hair after I washed it. I had to put my head down to his level and he’d stand up and grab hold (firmly!) with both front paws and lick away. Sadly; they changed the shampoo formula and he stopped entirely. What shampoo do you use??? π
I remember Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear. Fuzzy wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy lost his hair in a north pole barber chair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t Fuzzy Wuzzy Was he.
I remember a silly little song from the 50’s (I think it was the 50’s) that went, “Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear, Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair, Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy was he.” The Wolverine look is priceless!
One of my cats likes to sleep on my head at night. A friend came by and got me out of bed before I could comb it. She laughed at my hair so I told her Nova and I worked on it all night…do you like it?
I loved Elvis grooming the Man’s hair. I’m 72 and I remember the rhyme about fuzzy wuzzy. I wonder how old it is.
Georgia, I’ve look back quite often on your stories and artwork since you started this strip and have been struck with how it’s progressed. Your current art style formed early after the first few strips although it’s continued to improve. But your stories, jokes and word plays have grown by leaps and bounds! I find it remarkable how GOOD it’s become!!!
When I first started reading your strips, I enjoyed them. But now, I can barely wait for Monday and Thursday to see what you’ve come up each time. Like the others, the news feed at the bottom of some panels is a favourite of mine. These ones in particular are genuis. I’m so glad you love doing this web comic for us and it’s special to read that our delight in reading these makes you as happy too!
P.S. Got a chuckle out of NOT AN ACTUAL PHOTO — wonder which of our characters is the artist.
Thank you, Jude!! I am very proud of how far it has come; it feels many days almost like it sort of draws itself in my head and I shake up the pencil and pour it out, ha! (It’s not ALWAYS that easy, of course, but these characters have a certain sort of something special to them that makes writing with them a joy). And readers have made a huge difference too, I think. The more encouragement I’ve received, and understanding when a strip has to be late or postponed, etc, the more my confidence has grown I believe–and it’s made me feel safer taking a few risks, like writing specials very close to my heart and sharing them. Usually that would be sort of terrifying, ha! In a very short time I have come to love writing those for you all though, and I think it’s due to how supportive and kind everyone has been! This strip would look much different if it had indifferent readers; kind of like Tommy and his Christmas tree. There’s a lot of love being put into this strip on both sides, I think, and it’s made a big difference over a short time!
Please, please, please keep taking those risks, Georgia. It is amazing to see the evolution of the drawings and story lines even over the short period of time that I have been following it ( I discovered you a few months ago and have been pointing all receptive friends to the strip, with 100% success). The artwork is by turns whimsical and poignant, often in the same strip. You manage to tap in to a stream of experience common to a very broad group of people, across the country, who have never met and likely never will. On top of all that, The Boys look adorable in their little Pajamas. I particularly like Elvis in his glasses, bathrobe and little sleeveless tee shirt. It adds to his Edward R. Murrow, hard-bitten newsTom mystique. As far as understanding when the strip is delayed, you give us a great deal, but owe us nothing. Always worth waiting for. I just wish you were a daily strip, published in my newspaper, with multiple books and a tv special, and well compensated :).
Thank you so, so much Martha!! In 2016 I’m working with my editor at GoComics to get the strip ready for newspapers! Fingers crossed we pull it off!!! π
You know you are doing something right when your characters take over. This is now only nominally under your control. Your characters may be entirely in your headβbut they, not you, have the final say. In your case, Georgia, they are not in your head, but, as everyone knows, the cats are in charge. Humans are in charge of quarters, rations, and the weather. Cats are in charge of EVERYTHING ELSE. Period. (Just ask one.)
Love the strip, and I finally understand what the “crawls” are….and I remember dreaming this morning about my long hair….maybe it’s time to cut about eight to nine inches off, it’s about your length Georgia. Only I wear it in a bun, long hair doesn’t wear well on 62 year old women.
Long hair can wear beautifully on a woman of any age. Just treat it according to its natural type: Let curls be curly or keep straight hair smooth, and style it according to how YOU like it, not how you think you’re supposed to wear it because you’re in your sixties. If you’ve embraced your silver/grey/white, use products that bring out the sparkle and that cancel out any yellow tones. No matter what the colour, natural hair will always look glossier and have more dimension than dyed hair, but if your hair is dyed, use sulphate-free products to help the colour last longer and look better. (My mother is 68 and her hair is almost pure white. When she combs it out, it can look frizzy and a bit dry, but when she lets her curls set naturally, her hair is luminous.) π
I quite agree with you, Fish Lady. My mother is 70 and has kept her hair fairly short for almost as long as I can remember, and she has been dying it to cover the grey hairs ever since she noticed the first one.
However, her best friend, who is only a couple years younger, has wonderfully long hair. I’m not sure if it’s still blonde, or if it’s turned grey or white, since it was such a light blonde naturally to begin with. But she doesn’t color it, and she doesn’t curl or straighten it, so it flows very nicely.
So *that’s* what my cat Chloe is trying to do! She’ll rub and lick and even kick my hair–especially when it’s wet. She must disapprove of my style. π
BTW, Georgia your comics are bringing me great joy! Love, love, love them!!
My cats always chose this activity to do in the mornings, not only to awaken me but also (obviously) to improve my appearance. This strip reminded me of their soft but sandpaper-rough tongues, sometimes having a go at my head from both sides of the pillow at the same time. Perhaps this contributed to my lifetime gift of good balance. You Grok Cats.
Brilliant!! Like everyone who reads your BCN strips, I love them and cannot wait for Mondays and Thursdays. You are so talented. Thank you for all that you do.
But I have known girls who started growing their whiskers a lot younger than I did. And I had a full beard when I was 20! Where did you get this information?
Discussion (101) ¬
LOL! Your strip makes me wish every day was Monday and Thursdays!
Me, too!!!!!!
Wolverine π
He looks lie CatVis
The Man has been groomed? It appears that The Man has been truly “groomed”by Elvis. I think that Puck might be on to something about hair length and balance in humans. Lol
“How does she know how wide doors are?” – HA!
Loved that one!
There is a simple explanation. We furless monkeys do not need whiskers, because we have standardised door-widths.
I liked that one, too.
But Gene, that’s never stopped me from smacking my way around doorways all my life! I’d probably manage to do so going through barn doors too.
Um … there are doorways of at least four different widths in just my house. And at the risk of veering into tmi territory, when the shape of my body changed a couple years ago, built-in doorway/obstacle margin-of-error feelers would have come in handy.
I find the crawls especially fantastic… “How does she know how wide doors are?” Lol! =)
ROTFL-EVERYTHING-OFF!!!
Absolutely hilarious! “How does she know how wide doors are?”
Parker is grooming my arm right now, I laughed so hard at “how does she know how wide doors are,” she came over to look and see what was funny.
Love! The crawls *are* perfection. Do we know who writes them? Is it more Burt brilliance since he must be adding them to the feed, or just the staff in general?
I may go more into that in the future! As in early-mid 2016 π
ooh, grin, okay!
They have a life and mind of their own!

Oh my cats, I laughed so hard at this!!
LOLOL “The Man has been Groomed” — have you been holding on to that one for a while? Priceless!
“Wasn’t fuzzy, was he?” Made my day.
Thank you, Dew!! I feel very lucky! π
Penultimate panel: can we assume that Elvis had his clawsies out? (Yes I too have been groomed in such a manner by a grouchy cat!)
My first male Siamese used to groom my eyebrows when he thought I was sleeping.
That’s how Elvis grooms me!
my tortie wakes me up grooming my eyebrows! *glad i’m not the only one*
Lol, oh Elvis… both his attempt to ah… ‘fix’ the situation and the “Who did this to you?” I think I scared my IRL cats laughing a bit too hard. >.>
I’m not certain myself! It was a favorite in my house growing up, though! π
Not Mother Goose…
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair,
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t fuzzy,

It’s not Mother Goose, but it is a childhood rhyme.
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear.
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair.
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t very fuzzy,
Was he?
And there are a lot of variations. The one I really like is:
Fuzzy was a chemist,
But Fuzzy is no more
For what Fuzzy thought was H-2-O
Was H-2-S-O-4.
(Pronounce the letters. The chemicals are water and sulphuric acid.)
Bravo, Georgia
You’ve done it again!

Aw, we KNEW you didn’t dislike the Man as much as you like to pretend, Elvis! So cute you care enough to groom him.
LOL. Just love it. When you get older the “whiskers” will come out…..sadly I know this. And then we pluck them away. Oh my cat, what would they think of that!

Been to that, or a nearby, suburb of Hell. I admire your attitude. Best of luck!
I love Greebo’s name! I feel like Sophie would appreciate his style… Many wishes for comfort and good health to you, Jill!
My theory, the news feed is added by the robber nice…
We ladies are very happy to keep those pesky whiskers in hahaha, another happy day, thanks Georgia x

I would love to see her art, Megan!! That makes me so happy to hear!
“Honey? Why do I feel like ending all my sentences with ‘snikt’, ‘bub’, and want to drink gallonfulls of Maple Syrup?”
Very good performance art by Elvis. Should Sophie be worried about competition in art?

And may I add — a most CatHappy 2016 to everyone!
Grooming is one of the ways cats say, “I love you.”
There have been a few instances of cats licking people’s hair in my house. X3
I notice we can actually see Puck’s whiskers when he grabs them. =3
The change in the facial expression in the graphic is kinda funny. X3
Other than that, I’d pretty much like to ditto what others have said. ^_^
Aw, I used to have a hairdresser cat too! She loved to snuffle around in my hair, especially when I had just washed it.
Chanur used to -insist- on getting into my hair after I washed it. I had to put my head down to his level and he’d stand up and grab hold (firmly!) with both front paws and lick away. Sadly; they changed the shampoo formula and he stopped entirely. What shampoo do you use??? π

Poor chap
I love the woman’s no whiskers expression π Said with so much feeling
Love the crawls, they always add so much to the comics!!! LOVED the comment about the woman and door width! <3
Thank you!! It may explain why I knock into just about everything, ha!
I was kind of expecting Elvis to try to make the Man wear that cone thingie that he had to wear when he was over-grooming!
Yeah, my cat likes to groom my head too.
I like the disclaimer in the first panel that it isn’t an actual photo.
How do I make an appointment at Elvis’s Style and Hair Emporium?
One of my cats likes to sleep on my head at night. A friend came by and got me out of bed before I could comb it. She laughed at my hair so I told her Nova and I worked on it all night…do you like it?
I loved Elvis grooming the Man’s hair. I’m 72 and I remember the rhyme about fuzzy wuzzy. I wonder how old it is.

What is a Cornish Bandit, please? Is that a breed of cat? Or do you have a home for cat burglars?
should have punctuated! my Cornish Rex, Bandit…

As for the crawl, I always thought Lupin did it, as he seems to be the main “anchor”
lol!
Brilliant!! Like everyone who reads your BCN strips, I love them and cannot wait for Mondays and Thursdays. You are so talented. Thank you for all that you do.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!!
LOL! I sure have missed BCN while I’ve been away on holiday. π Having no internet or cell service can be excruciating at times.
But I have known girls who started growing their whiskers a lot younger than I did. And I had a full beard when I was 20! Where did you get this information?
Love Elvis’ grooming. “I can fix this.” And the Man’s reaction is priceless. Probably doesn’t get that much affection from Elvis, normally.
