I’m not certain if I understand the question, but the strip often posts in the afternoon or evening. If I’m lucky, ha! I try my best to post new strips on Mondays and Thursdays, but I’m the stay at home Mom of a two year old and a 5 month old and life occasionally gets in the way. I work on the strip during their nap times and after they have gone to sleep at night. If it is ever late, never fear, it’s on its way! I try my best to balance being a Mom and a cartoonist, but some weeks it’s more of a juggle than others. π
Burt is indeed a real cat! He is owned by my good friends Christine and Will and their children, and he really does live on a local farm! I will add a page with photos of Burt and a little bit more about his real life personality soon!
Yes! I thought the pictures you posted! What a handsome kitty! And I love Lupin holding Elvis back in the first panel. My kids love the strip, too. They go on my computer when I get up and immediately look for your strip. We all want kitties, but the Huz is allergic. *Sigh.*
Panel 1. Priceless. Last panel: is this the start of an adventure for Tommy and will he get lost again? Burt’s walking pose in the last panel is classic cool, with the curve of the tail. Beautifully captured. The wall: so evocative of New England, and I don’t care about that book that redefines the Frost poem! p.s. Is that the pose Lupin was attempting when he tightrope-walked on the edge of the crib? π
That sounds like an English accent, in which case that should surely be a good cuppa cha, rather than coffee in his thermos! Lots of smiles – is he a Cheshire cat by any chance?
If he were a Cheshire cat that would explain why he’s never been seen before!
I’m going to have to find some examples of a New England accent as I’m not sure what its like. At the moment Burt has a slow generic “rural” accent in my head – I think the New England accent is close to Devon/Cornish so he’s sounding like someone from Dartmoor at the moment! π
Purrrrfect first panel. Tommy is priceless in panel 9 and love Burt, handsome, rugged, can’t resist a guy with a beard. Will he be Puck’s adventure? Have your terrific trio ever caught a mouse??
Pucky has, crazy for how sweet he is, ha! He is the best hunter of the three. A mouse tried to get into Toddler’s room this year and Puck stopped it. We realized after finding the poor dead mouse–and the toy box on its side with the contents hastily tossed everywhere (while Toddler was still in his crib). He also took down a mouse this winter.
I’m not too surprised about Puck, after all he is a mighty hunter! Just assumed that Elvis would be the best hunter, not liking anyone new to enter his domain.
But, how does buzzy mouse feel about Puck’s hunting prowess? Is Puck seeing a Psycatatrist to sort out his mixed feelings about killing the mice? Poor Puck π
This is just too amazing for words <3
Puck sums up the new boy perfectly for us π So Handsome! <3 Hope he comes back to visit he boys often… though i'm sure Elivs would disagree with that… any more puffy and his fur will fly off!
i hope you enjoyed painting the outdoor scenes as much as i loved looking at them, the colors are just so amazing it's making me long for autumn more than i already was π
POOR Elvis! Georgia, your strips just keep getting better and better, exponentially! Thanks for bringing some Autumn color to my Florida continuation of HOT Summer (although it was only 70 degrees early this morning)!
My guess is that Burt is a Maine Coon Cat (So Handsome). He looks like one and his accent I guess, is New England. My Maine Coon, Susy Q was just beautiful with such a delightful personality. I still miss her very much.
I was born and bought up in a barn
I’m a marmalade cat who loves the great outdoors.
I think we are soul mates Burt, forget the rest and take me with you π
Thanks for introducing us to Burt – that’s my husband’s favorite “fake name” that he gives to many theoretical people, and I was seriously considering using it for the next cat we get (which I wanted to be handsome and orange)!
I am new to this strip and to the concept of cartoons in my email in box, but adapting quickly ! Georgia, I discovered you when my husband received his URI alumni magazine. I was flipping through it, and came across a story on this strip. Wonderful, poignant, funny, sweet. So far my favorite sequence was the Christmas special, where Elvis manages to get Tommy reunited with his staff, and maybe get some appreciation for how fortunate he is. I am fortunate, too, for having stumbled across you.
Awww, I love Burt already!! Elvis being grabbed by Lupin, priceless!! Tommy always happy, but my favorite is Elvis being all puffed up!! Awesome today, I mean Pawsome!! Meow!!
I was hearing Burt with a Scottish accent, myself, but I have to admit, he sounds more “natural” as a New-Englander. π Great work as usual, Georgia!

Tim Sample and Bob Bryan illustrating how to talk Yankee.
In our house it’s the youngest boy who wants to invite the visiting neighbors in and the girl who doesn’t want other cats anywhere in her viewing area. We have a recent visitor who was obviously not a stray. I finally posted an inquiry on the neighborhood Facebook page to find out where he lives. He is named Daniel, but some neighbors call him Stinky. His person maintains that he smells “earthy” and he likes it that way!
Panel one is now my screen background. And the last panel makes me think of Aristocats. Only because the song “Everybody wants to be a cat” goes through my head.
Love how Lupin has to hold Elvis back by his braces! So much praise for this comic strip – love the storyline, love the new character, seriously love the artwork as it is stunning, love Tommy in his bow tie and Puck’s little head popping in from the side of the panel and, as always, LOVE POOFY ELVIS!!!!
I wanted to mention here, in case you’re not on my FB page or Twitter, right now my original watercolor painting of ‘Breaking Cat News’ characters having a ‘Tail-Ethon’ is up for auction on Ebay! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Breaking-Cat-News-original-watercolor-painting-by-Georgia-Dunn-/271986480463? All of the proceeds are going to be donated to Doctors Without Borders, to help refugees. And thanks to an donor (who would prefer to remain anonymous) all of the Ebay fees, PayPal fees, and shipping will be covered so truly ALL proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders! π
That is such a wonderfully generous thing to do, Georgia – kudos to you and your anonymous donor! If I had money, I’d bid; at least we donate to Doctors Without Borders on a monthly basis….
On the BCN instagram, our hostess and comic artist mentions that Burt is meant to sound like Sam Eliot. So that made me wonder what the other cats might sound like, and here’s what I think I tend to hear in my head:
– Elvis – Bill Hader, Jim Parsons, or Alfonso Ribeiro
– Puck – Owen Wilson, Neil Patrick Harris, or “Stranger Than Fiction” Will Ferrell
– Lupin – Chris Pratt, Topher Grace, or Matthew Gray Gubler
– Tommy – John Candy or Henry Winkler
– Tabitha – Vanessa Williams or Meryl Streep
– Sir Figaro Newton – Antonio Banderas or Michael Clarke Duncan
It’s been forever since I’ve seen something with Salma Hayek in it, so I went to look up some clips on YouTube to refresh my memory, and I have to agree. Salma Hayek has a really great voice for Tabitha.
Burt looks a lot like the very lucky cat that was found in his unburned home today when his people, who had evacuated a couple of days ago from the horrific fire in Middletown, CA were able to come back and found him hiding under a chest. We fear many many cats, kittens and other pets were not so fortunate. The horrible effects of this continuing wild fire is unbelievable. Always have an evacuation plan in place…one never knows. Our little shelter is close enough to be worried, but we are offering shelter to displaced cats and dogs as long as we can find room.
As a New Englander, I didn’t even notice Burt having an accent at first. His cap, thermos, and blanket all seem perfectly logical and entirely suitable. Therefore, I’d say that you captured a local barn cat perfectly!
Likin’ the hat. What’s in the backpack?
I think that’s a coffee thermos!
Looks like a rolled up blanket and coffee thermos.
I agree with you.
Is he Scottish? He has a tartan hat, also he has a dinghy so he could be from Inverness or John o’ Groats?
He is meant to be a rural American New Englander, but I can see where folks have been getting Scottish from.
Thanks, But the next one is supossed to be out on Thursday morning. Why?
I’m not certain if I understand the question, but the strip often posts in the afternoon or evening. If I’m lucky, ha! I try my best to post new strips on Mondays and Thursdays, but I’m the stay at home Mom of a two year old and a 5 month old and life occasionally gets in the way. I try my best to balance being a Mom and a cartoonist, but some weeks it’s more of a juggle than others. π
Georgia, you are doing an awesome job. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, Lex-Kat!! π
Burt reminds me of my little guy, Sean. Especially with the mane.http://gallery.spundreams.net/index.php/kitties/sean/s-jello/IMG_6609
That is a beautiful ginger kitty!
Gorgeous!! And what a fun box!
So, I’m guessing some kind of fall event took you to the farm nearby where you met this cat? π
PUCKY! Even just a head popping in, and he stole the comic for me.
Poofy Elvis is my favorite!
The plot thickens! Is there a real Burt who comes around?
Burt is indeed a real cat! He is owned by my good friends Christine and Will and their children, and he really does live on a local farm! I will add a page with photos of Burt and a little bit more about his real life personality soon!
Yes! I thought the pictures you posted! What a handsome kitty! And I love Lupin holding Elvis back in the first panel. My kids love the strip, too. They go on my computer when I get up and immediately look for your strip. We all want kitties, but the Huz is allergic. *Sigh.*
Oops — “I saw the pictures you posted.”
You could try a siberian, they’re really fluffy but don’t bother allergies as much as most cats.
Somehow I can just imagine Elvis being voiced by Steve Martin. Especially when he yells.
Ooh, not Scots, rock-ribbed New Englander! Ayuh.
Oh goodie! I can’t wait to see what kind of work a barn cat is up to. . . And how will a house cat , like Tommy react to work?
Since Tommy thinks birds are small cats, I think he will be horrified at what a farm cat’s work consists of. π
I wonder what they will awnser.
Awwww! Though I did assume Burt was a girl. Not sure why, as both of my long haired ginger cats have been guys.

between this comic and today being the one cool, crisp day we’re getting in an otherwise hot and humid week, I’m longing for autumn so much right now.
Burt is such a renaissance man!!!
That sounds like an English accent, in which case that should surely be a good cuppa cha, rather than coffee in his thermos! Lots of smiles – is he a Cheshire cat by any chance?
If he were a Cheshire cat that would explain why he’s never been seen before!

I smell Adventure!
what a handsome boy Burt is! Tommy better not wander too far! Not sure my heart can handle another Tommy reunion story π
Squeeeeeeee!

Oh Elvis, I love how territorial you are!
“So handsome!”
This is just too amazing for words <3

So much mystery!
POOR Elvis! Georgia, your strips just keep getting better and better, exponentially! Thanks for bringing some Autumn color to my Florida continuation of HOT Summer (although it was only 70 degrees early this morning)!
Someone has his knickers in a knot…..lol
Every time I see Elvis, I’m reminded of my own Siamese’s emotional extremes. It’s much funnier in a comic than in real life!
Please send Cat News directly to my email address !
Love The Site
Regards
Scott
“So handsome” – aw, is Pucky going to fall in love???? And poor puffy Elvis, how much more newness can he stand?!
For some reason I’m reading Burt with Billy Connelly’s voice even though it hasn’t been made perfectly clear that he is Scottish.
Hmmmmm, I was thinking Sean Connery, (big sigh)
Love Tommy’s “Seriously who DOES that?”
A cardigan! Burt is wearing a cardigan – with pockets! – and that makes me LURVE him so much.
I adore the tartan thermos, and I wonder if he smokes a pipe.
My guess is that Burt is a Maine Coon Cat (So Handsome). He looks like one and his accent I guess, is New England. My Maine Coon, Susy Q was just beautiful with such a delightful personality. I still miss her very much.

Yes, but it’s a bit long text.
Awww, I love Burt already!! Elvis being grabbed by Lupin, priceless!! Tommy always happy, but my favorite is Elvis being all puffed up!! Awesome today, I mean Pawsome!! Meow!!
“IT’S SHORT and WE NEED ALL of IT!
best line
I was hearing Burt with a Scottish accent, myself, but I have to admit, he sounds more “natural” as a New-Englander. π Great work as usual, Georgia!
Perhaps the ceiling cats have also noticed the handsome newcomer…….?
Hold ing Elvis back is great! So cute!
I am obviously dating myself. His name is Burt, he’s a New England barn cat, he has to be voiced by Tim Sample!

Oh how cute, all yourkitties are special. Georgia, thanks xxx
Yet again: SQUEE!
The first panel is genius. That could have been the whole edition. Just that.
If Tommy joins Burt on his walk it might do him good. Although I enjoy a fluffy, big cat, he could lose a few. Not to be mean, but, just sayin’.
That first panel may be my favorite thing you’ve ever drawn. And that’s saying something!
Whenever I hear the name Burt, I immediately think of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins!
Tommy is so cute! i just want to pull him out of the screen and give him a hug!
Will Camera One be able to follow Tommy and Burt back to the barn?
Camera One sees all, knows all, and hopefully transmits back to us. Tommy’s a wanderer, isn’t he?
I love Burt’s accessories. He looks like a Ghillie attending property in Scotland.
In our house it’s the youngest boy who wants to invite the visiting neighbors in and the girl who doesn’t want other cats anywhere in her viewing area. I love that! Ooh, he does seem to have a touch of Thomas O’Malley to him! π
The first and last Elvis panels are amazing.
Oh, Man..
Elvis is about 2 points below going ballistic !!!
: )

This needs to be an animated show on Cartoon Network. I would watch all the time.
On the BCN instagram, our hostess and comic artist mentions that Burt is meant to sound like Sam Eliot. So that made me wonder what the other cats might sound like, and here’s what I think I tend to hear in my head:

There’s definitely a John Candy look to Tommy in panel 9.
But Tabitha would have to be Salma Hayek.
It’s been forever since I’ve seen something with Salma Hayek in it, so I went to look up some clips on YouTube to refresh my memory, and I have to agree. Salma Hayek has a really great voice for Tabitha.
hellos to dashing Burt the barn cat.

Our little shelter is close enough to be worried, but we are offering shelter to displaced cats and dogs as long as we can find room.
As someone who got my second kitty after hearing news that a shelter had burned down (It turns out to be far more complicated), thank you.
As a New Englander, I didn’t even notice Burt having an accent at first. His cap, thermos, and blanket all seem perfectly logical and entirely suitable. Therefore, I’d say that you captured a local barn cat perfectly!
seriously hearing cartoonish scrabbling sounds in first panel….Elvis’ feet making like Fred Flintstone’s while Lupin holds his suspenders!
What does Biggest Spoon mean?
In the BCN world, the cats believe that people feel better when they feel like the “big spoon” when ‘spooning.’ http://www.breakingcatnews.com/comic/the-woman-is-feeling-under-the-weather/ This broadcast appeared on GoComics as well, but I’m not certain when it ran.
