It’s great what you’re doing with Puck’s eyes and mouth to make his personality shine through, Georgia! A tiny bit of cat ear body language can also help display the inner mood of our boy. I also really like that you don’t feel the need to end every sentence with an exclamation point, the way many daily cartoonists automatically do.
One of my previous cats, Midas, would go craaaaazy over beef jerky! He would pretty much push his face into my mouth so he could grab the jerky straight from my mouth! I never gave him any, but when I had turkey, he would want that too, so I gave him some turkey. Two of my current cats love ham and turkey and it’s hard for me to make a sandwich with one or both of those meats since they are fighting over who gets it, and I’m usually the loser! π
There’s a lovely Miyazaki film from a few years back, “Ponyo,” in which a goldfish becomes a little girl and one of the first words out of her mouth is a bright, shouting “HAM!” when she discovers that meat. Puck and Ponyo are clearly soulmates {g}….
“Plentiful water dishes.” I laughed right out loud when I read that! I think the transition from old to new formats is going very smoothly (especially because I don’t have the anxiety of a days-long wait between strips.) I am still enchanted by your boys and their antics, your artwork, and your storytelling. Georgia, I wish you all the best with this newest development and all in the future! ~ V
I have some fantastic news! Last night I was able to automate the strip here, meaning that the strip posted on its own at midnight on the west coast! This means from now on–barring any emergencies/unexpected delays–‘Breaking Cat News’ will post at midnight Central Time on GoComics and midnight Pacific Time on this site!
The new format allows me to work ahead of schedule, and so far I have been able to catch up to about two weeks out! To put this into perspective, almost every strip before this was painted the night before or the same morning it posted! People have suggested before I create a “buffer” by getting ahead, but the strips were so long and life with two toddlers was so hectic that it was impossible. I would have had to take time off to get ahead, and life already forced me to take enough time off for Baby’s arrival and moves and whatnot. As it is, I may have to take some time off this autumn to really buckle down and get examples of the comic ready to pitch to newspapers. However, I will give as much notice as I can, and until then–Daily strips, posted on time! Oh, hooray!
I’m still trying to figure out the future of the notifications. The email service I use to send them out has certain “volume tiers” and daily notifications may exceed that, and I’m trying to wrap my head around it. For now, the notifications will still go out when the strips posts here! If you are someone who does not enjoy seven emails a week, I completely understand if you unsubscribe and you will not hurt my feelings! (I am actually in that boat when it comes to these things myself!) If you really enjoy the notifications throughout the week, I am trying to think of something new and fun to maybe replace those 1-2 times a week if it does turn out that daily notifications are trouble. It’s really fun when Beatrix excitedly emails all of us, and I want to keep that feeling of fun, vs the email notifications feeling stale and canned.
Lastly–thank you so much for all of your patience during this transition, and for just listening to me explain what some of this looks like on my end. It’s nice to be able to tell you what is going on. Not every cartoonist or writer or artist has this kind of audience. And as more people find the comic, one day there will probably be people who are a little more negative or mean about changes or hiccups in how things run. I feel incredibly fortunate that so many of you are so kind, understanding, supportive, and excited with me. I like to hope that when anything goes wrong computer wise, those of you who have been here from the beginning immediately start to chuckle like, “That’s just Georgia, messing something up on the site!” And hopefully you know I’ll be tinkering until I get it sorted out for us. You should have seen me trying to get the new font right! (I still am).
Going daily brought up a few issues that I never would have predicted or expected until… I went daily! And getting the strips to post automatically and figuring out notifications going forward are two things I have to “do” vs try or read about. I don’t learn that way, I have to actually do something and then often times (thank God) I get it pretty quick! That was one reason my editor suggested I go daily online as we get the strip ready for newspapers. She has comfortingly encouraged me the past few days, “There’s nothing like time and practice.” Each daily strip is going to get a little better and better. And each round of headlines, (“The Dinner Party” and coming up soon… A vet visit! Yes! Finally!) should get noticeably better, as I still write, ink, and paint the “stories” in batches. So, each new headline will be written, inked, and painted with what I learned in the last one.
I’m so excited for this, and I hope you are enjoying these so far, and they will only get better!
Georgia, I unsubbed from the notifications–somewhat reluctantly, because they’re from happily excited Beatrix–but if you go to some sort of less frequent and still fun (it’d be hard for you to do something we wouldn’t find fun!), I’ll sign back up. As it is, I visit this site, the GoComics site, *and* I get BCN as part of my daily GoComics email.
My one thought about BCN in the papers–except for Sunday, wouldn’t it have to be b/w? That would have a decided effect on the ‘flavor’ of all the great stuff you do with it.
They most likely will be! We’re still working on that part of it. Even if they are in color online, they will most likely be in black and white in most newspapers, only because that’s what they print in.
As a reader of this comic (my new favorite!!!) and many others on GoComics, I need to tell you how impressed I am with you – not only for the wonderful artwork and fabulous storylines, but also for keeping your readers so well informed. I am touched that you think so much of us that you explain so much and include us in your plans. Thank you, thank you for inviting us in!
Oh yes, please. Plushies. I was given a plush from another comic artist (Sarah of Sarah’s Scribbles,) she did a kickstarter for it, but since BCN is now a GoComics partner, they can do it through their resources. I totally want a set of plush Robber Mice Ladies (tm.) and a BabaMouse. Oh and Bea. Oh pfui, I want all of them, I want a whole collection of BCN stuffies.
Plushies? Did someone say Plushies! I have a whole collection of Internet kitty plushies and the BCN crew would go great with them. Simon’s Cat, Eben & Snooch (Two Lumps), Grumpy Cat, Chickenfish, and a Dustpuppy (while not technically a cat, he fits in with the others).
The big challenge is to decide which one to get first.
Torsten and Esse can smell when I’m thinking about ham. They can be compleatly comatose and if I think about taking ham or bacon out of the freezer they will be in the kitchen before I get off the couch.
Glad you worked that out Georgia. You learn really fast & try so hard to please everyone. Sometimes you won’t be able to. I am sure all your loyal fans understand that. I was going to pick my sons brain about the notification thing. He runs servers from his apartment and does some programming & troubleshooting. Big time gamer too. π. The one problem is he’s not great at getting back to me very fast… sometimes.
Those both sound so good.
I have been missing my favorite “Range Rattlers”: bacon wrapped shrimp that has been stuffed with a fresh jalapeno and cheese!
You’re doing great Georgia!! balancing your family life with work cannot be easy so I commend you for all that you have been able to accomplish this year, teething, potty training, a book, dailies, specials, the coming calendar, comic con, etc, etc. makes my head spin. Of course we know that there will be computer glitches, but who cares, they’ll get ironed out. It’s part of being in the BCN community hee hee. Take time to step back and really enjoy this time with your family and this exciting time of creating, it will pass quickly. Still keeping you and your family in prayer over the loss of your Nana. She must be so very proud of you!! Also, the reason you have such a great community following you is that you are so great yourself, you’re vulnerable, open, sweet, caring, generous, & you love cats!! We love your BCN family as though they are our own!! God bless you Ms Georgia!!!
PLUSHIES!!! Yes, I quite agree, they are a must when the proper time arrives. Just loving the dailies. Congrats on all your hard work, Georgia, your fans really appreciate it!
I forwarded today’s strip to a dear friend who needed cheering up in the worst possible way. She loved it! It reminded both of us of the time that her dog gobbled down a rumaki (finger food made of water chestnuts, liver (duck or chicken), bacon, soy sauce, ginger or brown sugar) — toothpick and all. It happened so quickly that no one had time to stop him from doing it. Thankfully, he did not suffer any injury! If anyone tells you that your cartoons don’t help people, just show ’em this email. π
Well done Georgia. I enjoy the daily format. Sometimes the longer stories were a lot to take in at one go and from reading the book I was sure the short version would work. Although am I the only person who is worrying about Elvis being shut in the coat room for so long?
Considering how much spam we all undoubtedly get, I see little problem with seven notification emails a week. I have my filters set so that BCN emails all go to a special folderβand every one is welcome.
“And as more people find the comic, one day there will probably be people who are a little more negative or mean about changes or hiccups in how things run.”
It’s a shame that some people never really grow past the “terrible twos” or “tempestuous threes,” spoiled brats who will never grow up.
In that regard, you have many friends. Some of us are large, ugly, and like cats far better than we like most humans. We can also write with sufficient erudition to scathingly excoriate such miscreants should their umbrage become too obnoxious.
Hi Georgia!! We love you all and this makes my day, everyday to see BCN!! I’m delighted to be part of this journey and part of this pawsome group of people!! Long Live BCN!! Meow!!
I do enjoy getting the regular e-mail from Beatrix, but understand completely if it becomes no longer possible. I get my BCN fix from my GoComics feed as well as from this site (as a personal daily link for the comments and second/third/fourth looks at everything I missed), so don’t really need the e-mail.
An another note, when will the second BCN book be published, he asks hopefully!
It will be fun to meet the family vet and see how our three boys interact with him/her. I took Her Rotundity for her checkup a month or so ago. She strolled around the exam room checking out the equipment while the vet discussed what needed to be done. She didn’t seem too upset until they took her into the back room for shots, a blood draw and nail clipping. When the vet tech brought her back in her carrier his entire chest was covered with grey hair shed by an agitated Jingles while he held her for treatment! No obvious wounds on him, fortunately. Jingle Bell Katt doesn’t seem to be too much of a biter or scratcher but she will push away with a paw or try to leap away from being held. Oh well, we’re in good shape for another six months!
Why do all cats revert to the “inner tiger” when confronted with any kind of pork?
My three all act like tigers hunting “wild boar”. They seem to think that bacon, ham, roast pork, etc. was their “natural prey”!
Little tigers, all three of them.
;-D
Yay Georgia YAY!!! So glad things are working well for you on BCN!! You are such an amazing artist and story-teller. We are soooo lucky to have you! Thank you thank you so very much for all you do.
P.S. My little MoonPie Bunny is a hog ham too.

I think you will find this to be a great reference help as the number of strips quickly builds. Many artists do this and I think you and your readers will come to appreciate this as we look back for favorites.
Ham is in immenent danger!
Oooh, are those bacon wrapped treats? And ham! That brings out Puck’s <3 love.
Ahhhh……sweet, sweet ham.
Puck is in his happy place — delicious pork on every plate!π»π»
Awwwww happy Puck. π Do all the boys love ham, or just Puck? Oddly, neither of my cats will touch it. They both love chicken, though.
Fresh turkey for my guys. I get a little and they get a lot. Only fair.
Puck in that tuxedo is making me want BCN plushes bad!
Oh, Pucky! You are so smart! And so handsome in your tuxedo! (P.S. to Georgia: I love the “ham love hearts” in the final panel! Too cute!).
Ah, the dreaded hamwort!
It’s great what you’re doing with Puck’s eyes and mouth to make his personality shine through, Georgia! A tiny bit of cat ear body language can also help display the inner mood of our boy. What a treat, I arrive in Madagascar, find internet and discover that BCN has gone daily. When I get home there will be much catching up, lol.
Happy Puck π
Just have the love the Puck! That boy always makes me smile.
Oooh — how about some bacon wrapped ham?
Oh, you don’t want the “water” in those dishes, Puck.
Puck has great taste in food – bacon wrapped scallops (I think) and ham!
I agree – Puck looks huggable! Those snacks look like rumaki to me, but then it’s about lunchtime.
Puck’s expression when looking at the ham is priceless π
the treats look like they are “Angels on Horseback”, bacon-wrapped shrimp
am I right? what do I win?
Very close! Bacon wrapped scallops! Although, bacon wrapped shrimp does sound about as Heavenly as the name!
extremely heavenly! Puck would approve.
I see Monica a few comments above, called the bacon-wrapped scallops.
Mexican restaurant in Everett, WA has a ‘specialty of the house’ that’s basically bacon-wrapped grilled prawns. SO good!
That sounds so good! We missed that somehow when we were living in Everett in 2010-2012!
was just looking at the past reports and saw in the bookstore near beatrix is a book with young wicket and baba on it. nice foreshadowing

Chickenfish! HAIL!!!!!
We have a Chickenwhale–one of the special-order Chickenfishes that turned out much larger than the original.
Me too!
Lol! Lots of water bowls! Omg Pucky, I am right there with you for some of that gorgeous ham. π΄ ππ±
Puck certainly has the “party basics” down pat. Love it!
Torsten and Esse can smell when I’m thinking about ham. They can be compleatly comatose and if I think about taking ham or bacon out of the freezer they will be in the kitchen before I get off the couch.

I got a chuckle out of the “plentiful water dishes” . . . another online cat calls them “red stupid drinks”.

Ooooo – BCN plushies would be awesome!!!!
I started worrying about that ham when I saw it in such close proximity to Pucky in yesterday’s strip.
PLUSHIES!!! Yes, I quite agree, they are a must when the proper time arrives. Just loving the dailies. Congrats on all your hard work, Georgia, your fans really appreciate it!
different assortment of water dishes lol
ham wonderful glazed ham save me a slice please.
perhhaps brown suger glaze?
upcoming..a vet visit yikes
Don’t worry! No spoilers, but it’s just a vet check up visit!
I am so happy for you and wish you all the best. As for me, I am just enjoying the strip every day.
Is there some type of mentor available to you? It must be hard to do this all on your own. Some one from comic con maybe?
I am very lucky to have a few veterans who have lent me advice and a helpful ear! My editor is a wonderful resource too, she is tremendously helpful.
Love Puck’s love of ham. π»π»π»

“Ham, ma’am?” rides again.

I have not heard anything yet, but I too hope there will be more!
Ham… Pucks big weakness…
Also THIS hasn’t been said yet but MUST BE SAID!!!
I support BCN plushies idea BUT THERE MUST BE A HAWAIIAN TOMMY PLUSHIE!!
I don’t care if the country runs out of cotton to contain all that love…
It will be fun to meet the family vet and see how our three boys interact with him/her. I took Her Rotundity for her checkup a month or so ago. Puck looks adorable!!! Love his expressions!..
Love the daily strips. A nice surprise pick me up each day. I don’t understand why there’s no pork cat food. All of ours gave adored ham, bbq, chops.
Why do all cats revert to the “inner tiger” when confronted with any kind of pork?
My three all act like tigers hunting “wild boar”. They seem to think that bacon, ham, roast pork, etc. was their “natural prey”!
Little tigers, all three of them.
;-D
Georgia — the LA Times has daily comics in color (except for a few). Maybe we’ll see you there!
Yay Georgia YAY!!! So glad things are working well for you on BCN!! You are such an amazing artist and story-teller. We are soooo lucky to have you! Thank you thank you so very much for all you do.

By the way, my paper in Portland, Oregon prints daily comics in color.
Thank you, Martha!
Pucky & Ham! Why isn’t this the Valentine’s Day strip???
And, Georgia, I agree. You have so many nice posters on this site who understand what you are doing. I admit I have started to read the comments just to see what my favorite posters are up to. For example, I love the periodic updates about Her Rotundity, Jingle Bell Katt (reminding me of my–sniffle–deceased fur-covered bowling ball, Burnie). Thank you not only for the strip but for creating this community of…yes, I’ll say it…friends.
I would like to suggest that you include the date of the strip somewhere small between panels now that you are daily. I think you will find this to be a great reference help as the number of strips quickly builds. Many artists do this and I think you and your readers will come to appreciate this as we look back for favorites.
Love the purple ears on some of the cats. My blue cat has lavender ears…
“I would like some ham, please!”
“Is potato, mom cat.”
