I think I might need to collect all the charts and stuff. I always need to know what EXPERTS TELL US and what SOURCES INDICATE and the like. (I adore their fact-free expertise so much. Also “Sugar and Spice and Chicken-Fried Rice’. I think that occasioned some gasping-for-air-type laughter.)
WONDERFUL! I don’t know where to start, the chart, thanks for giving me real scientific proof I can use next time. I love Elvis’ it’s got me. Puck looking so cute in his rain gear, Lupin’s tail sticking out of the covers, and Gwen has your beautiful eyes. Does she in real life too? Too bad the Man couldn’t have a rain day too.
I absolutely agree….I always knew that there was SOMETHING urging me to stay in bed on weekend mornings. Ms. Dunn may have made a discovery that should earn her the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Rain days are awesome…although with our 8 rescues and stray reporters, there’s always SOMEONE active! Our crowded newsroom bustles with activity–OK, panic–if Mr. Thunder stops for an interview. The beds get REAL crowded, quick. Both on and under!
So much in this one, from the scrolling news feed to Puck’s rain outfit to the chart to Elvis succumbing to gravity. The best, though, is the “Rain is a symphony” panel. It is heartbreakingly lovely. It is a soothing riot of color and mood and emotion. You wouldn’t think a comic would nearly move a person nearly to tears, would you? 🙂
Love Puck’s staring out of the window’s thoughts, always wondered what mighty hunters think about when they sit gazing out at the world, in earnest contemplation ………………….. for hours on end
Yes, yes, yes! Oh my goodness, yes. A rainy day, a good book, warm tea, covers and a few cats make an irresistible recipe for making babies, and other humans, blissfully happy. Aaaaah.
I’ve always know that there was some force or other urging, nay compelling, me to stay in bed on weekend mornings. You’ve nailed it! I’m nominating you for the Nobel Prize in Physics for your brilliant discovery. (at least now I can say that I’m not lazy, I’m just obeying the law of gravity….and I’m a law-abiding citizen.)
Ah, rain is my favourite weather too – although our cats don’t necessarily curl up on the bed any more than non-rainy days, instead they might look at the rain gliding down the glass balcony door and try to catch each drop! “Rain is a symphony” – beautifully expressed, Georgia!
Possibly also refers to the kneading habit of happy kitties, aka ‘making biscuits’. Mind you, it’s got me in the mood for baking some cookies as well, so it’s happy times all around.
This strip just made me happy right to my toes. “Rain is a symphony” — just the most perfect line anywhere. Thank you!!
(And I am so glad science finally confirmed the rain-bed connection. Hey – it’s science. You can’t argue with science!
What a beautiful comic! I love the cats, the world through their perspective, and the gorgeous watercolors. I just discovered this and read through your whole collection…I hope you publish this as a book someday. Looking forward to more. 🙂
The bed’s gravitational pull finally explained! Beautiful offering today. Oh, if only it were raining here instead of 100+ degrees with no symphonies in sight.
OMG yes, please get a Cafe Press account where we can get a mug with the last three panels on it. I would buy this so much. Rain is a symphony and the cuddles in the napping place. I would buy a mug like this so fast and make loads of hot chocolate in it. I would buy metric tonnes of merchandise with your art on it. Totes, t-shirts, mugs.
The news feed at the bottom…… so awesome. I always suspected that gravity changes on rainy days. Good to have some scientific support. Now I wish it was a rainy day here. Sigh.
Thank you!! Stuffed penguin’s name is “Pengo.” Half because it is easy to say, half after an 80s video game (the Man owns an arcade cabinet of it, by chance!) The Toddler and I encountered him on a trip to the local aquarium last October, and the fuzzy little fellow quickly became like another family member. It only felt right to start adding Pengo into panels!
I love Breaking Cat News! What a wonderful talent you have to draw your furry friends and family in such an engaging manner. I hope you will put these great drawings in a bound edition for us cat lovers to enjoy. My two cats Widget and Clio look over my shoulder when I read your comic in the morning. Thank you for the great start to my day!
If you like rain, move to Tampa! It’s rained every day for the past two weeks, more than 5″ overnight here. My girls and I love our rainy afternoon naps but this is getting ridiculous!!!
Georgia, you have no idea how much I needed this. Tomorrow we put our Amy to sleep after 18+ wonderful years together. It’s so heartening to see all those other kitties and their human companions living and loving. After the healing I hope to love more kitties again soon.
My biggest sympathies, Elayne. I lost my favorite a while back, (those were -manly- tears!) and probably his brother before the end of this year. I really feel for you.
My partner always complains when “they’ve turned the gravity up” and retreats to the bedroom to rest. I didn’t realise until now it was the bed doing it.
I love listening to the sound of rain on the roof; the AC tends to drown it out, though. 🙁 Also, I’ll take the rain, someone else can have the lightening and thunder – doesn’t put me to sleep, makes me antsy about tornados. :S
I love all the little details in this comic. The boy’s PJs are awesome, the little penguin plushie, Lupin’s tail sticking out from under the covers in panels 10/11 and 14, Puck lounging on the cat tower, Elvis being conquered by the bed… So much wonderful! n__n
As a Physical Science teacher, I think I can explain the sudden increase of bed gravity. Beds are known to be made of some absorbent materials. During a the early part of a rain storm, the family naturally takes shelter in the bed, and the additional love produced is absorbed by the bed. This increases the overall mass. The occupants, in the act of snuggling, also decreased their distance from the bed. Gravity is a function of mass and distance, so, therefore, the gravity increases exponentially. If the love continues to grow, there is a potential for a black hole to form, creating a wormhole that will transfer Elvis and Lupin to my house. Rest assured that Fido and O’Malley will welcome them.
Amazing is the only word for you Georgia! Who ever said rainy days and Monday’s always get me down was wrong. On Monday we get Breaking Cat News and the sound of rain and a chance to just snuggle in is always welcome particularly right now in northern California when we have been burning up! Right now there are lots of evacuations and while it is scary for the humans, how terrifying it must be for all the critters! Thank you for Monday’s little island of sanity.
Thank you for saying! It is one of my own 🙂 It’s something I have said in many a (gentle) debate over sunny days vs rainy days, as the sound of rain itself is one of the things I love the most about it.
I just stumbled across this site last week and I’ve been “catching up” at every available moment since then!
Every panel is a masterpiece! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your work!
Is there a print or a mug available of “Sunshine is one note-rain is a symphony”?
Or a print of “Bed’s gravitational pull… so strong… it’s got me” ?
Thank you again!
Thank you, Jeni! Not yet, but I hope to add prints of those moments in the future! In the upcoming 2018 Breaking Cat News calendar, (by Andrew McMeel Publishing, and available for pre-order on Amazon!) the month of “April” is based on “Rain is a symphony!”
I’m so glad I shared these in my Facebook feed!! I get notified every once in a while in “On This Day…” and I remember to return to the original panels. Still love them!

Rain is my very favorite kind of weather. 🙂
Mine too! I love this one so much! The streaming headlines are perfect!
At some point, I promise, I will put out some “chart prints”! I want some myself….
There should be a print of “Sunshine is one note, rain is a symphony.” I’d buy one.
The notification email today had a slightly different headline, so the “emergency bulletin” would not be spoiled.
I agree boys napping is the best when its raining! And my kitties Mac and Minnie love baking biscuits in the rainy weather 😀
🙂
I often feel the gravitational pull of the bed. As it’s a gray day promising rain, I may just give in.
Yes! That is me just about every morning!
I needed this today!
If you love rain, move to Scotland. We have tons of it, even in summer. Actually, especially in summer.
We’re not certain yet–she seems to share mine and the Toddler’s eye color, but their shape may be the Man’s! She looks very much like him. 🙂
Elvis is a Dali-esque melting cat in that panel.
Napping kitties! My favorite!
It’s my all-time favorite also. The drearier, the better.
And the comment about sunshine being one note but rain a symphony is too true. I would buy that quote as a poster.
“The bed’s gravitational pull…” Now it all makes sense to me!
Last panel: so sweet :). I love Puck, “Rain is a symphony.” Beautiful!
I absolutely agree….I always knew that there was SOMETHING urging me to stay in bed on weekend mornings. Ms. Dunn may have made a discovery that should earn her the Nobel Prize in Physics.
Can’t have too many naps. Have interrupted mine to look at this breaking snews story. I reckon another is now in order….ZZZ…zzz….
Rain days are awesome…although with our 8 rescues and stray reporters, there’s always SOMEONE active! Our crowded newsroom bustles with activity–OK, panic–if Mr. Thunder stops for an interview. The beds get REAL crowded, quick. Both on and under!
Hope Tommy is warm and dry! I notice the Toddler’s hair is getting curlier in the comic. Does that reflect real life?
It does indeed! He has full curls now, I need to post some recent photos soon!
…rain is a symphony…beautiful.
=^+^=
Oh, man… totally how I’m feeling this morning with the rain. Sadly, I’m at work instead though. 🙁
Last panel, how adorable, and gwen’s joyful little face – nap on, brave kitties, nap on 🙂
D’awwww
The stuffed owl must be a favorite. I see the Lil Lady’s eyes are wide open, even tho everyone else is drowsy. Real life, eh?
So much in this one, from the scrolling news feed to Puck’s rain outfit to the chart to Elvis succumbing to gravity. The best, though, is the “Rain is a symphony” panel. It is heartbreakingly lovely. When I first read this I thought the comma after babies was a period. I thought, “What are the tea and book for?”
Ms. Dunn,
I’ve always know that there was some force or other urging, nay compelling, me to stay in bed on weekend mornings. You’ve nailed it! I’m nominating you for the Nobel Prize in Physics for your brilliant discovery. (at least now I can say that I’m not lazy, I’m just obeying the law of gravity….and I’m a law-abiding citizen.)
A grateful reader
Oh, I would love a mug or print of panels 11-12!
“Sunshine is one note. Rain is a symphony.”
That needs to be in the shop somehow, some way.
Ah, rain is my favourite weather too – although our cats don’t necessarily curl up on the bed any more than non-rainy days, instead they might look at the rain gliding down the glass balcony door and try to catch each drop! “Rain is a symphony” – beautifully expressed, Georgia!
Hmm, biscuit making weather? Why does this sound like a particularly British rain?
Unless it’s really biscuits & gravy making weather, which would make it a good Southern style rain.
Possibly also refers to the kneading habit of happy kitties, aka ‘making biscuits’. Mind you, it’s got me in the mood for baking some cookies as well, so it’s happy times all around.
Yes, indeed! I meant the squeezy/kneading kitty blanket biscuits. 🙂
“Biscuit making” as in kneading, that thing cats do with their paws when they’re nursing or relaxing on a soft blanket. 😀
Omg! Puckie in a raincoat sipping coffee! I think my head just exploded from the cuteness! Love it, Georgia!
I like that the Baby is the only one not napping.
This strip just made me happy right to my toes. “Rain is a symphony” — just the most perfect line anywhere. Thank you!!
(And I am so glad science finally confirmed the rain-bed connection. Hey – it’s science. You can’t argue with science!
Sweet! What is the little red thing that the Toddler is holding in the third panel? How cute that Miss Gwen is the only one awake in the last panel!
I meant that to be a sippy cup lid, it came out a little funny, ha!
Cant think of anything smart so, thankyou so very much!
What a beautiful comic! I love the cats, the world through their perspective, and the gorgeous watercolors. I just discovered this and read through your whole collection…I hope you publish this as a book someday. Looking forward to more. 🙂
touching illustrations of you and babes reading in bed. the last one especially gets to me–it’s how i felt with mine. xoxo

This is wonderful!
Lupin under the covers <3. I love the ticker: optimal biscuit making weather.
I like the transition between panels 8 and 9. Puck in his rain gear, and then realizing the rain is on the -other side- of the window! 🙂
You managed to fit a lot of fun images into this one, Georgia!
I love the rain, especially in late spring or early fall – not too warm, not cold. It sounds soothing and smells great!
Stuffed penguin is a welcome addition to any panel – that last is an especially lovely one – you look like Bliss personified 🙂
Pengo was one of my favorite video games. I spent many a quarter playing it in the game room of my dorm at college.
I love Lupin’s tail sticking out from under the covers in the last panel.
I love your cat news. They have great perspective on the going’s on of their suroundings.
Spot on as always! On rainy days our mogs run from the front to the back door to check if it’s raining on both sides of the flat 😀
This may be my favorite BCN yet! So much magic, humor, and charm in every panel!
Absolutely wonderful! I would say send the rain to where the fires are, but everyone there is enjoying it so much…
Cute! I got my red dot shirt today~. And there’s a typo in panel 5.
Yay! Thank you for ordering a red dot shirt! I’m not catching the typo still, I’m sorry! (I may be too close to it, ha!) What is the typo?
I didn’t take it as a typo. Rain Day is a specific kind of day.
Just notice the rain cloud on your mug in the last panel. I love these little surprises you put in.
Thank you, Gloria! 😀
Man, I have SO seriously been missing rain this summer. Seattle is so dry this year 🙁
Oh no! The Seattle rains are the exact rains I am missing! I’m sad to hear that. 🙁
We Hoosiers got all of your rain. (We even set a “Most rain in one month” record in July!)
If you like rain, move to Tampa! It’s rained every day for the past two weeks, more than 5″ overnight here. My girls and I love our rainy afternoon naps but this is getting ridiculous!!!
Love the last panel… Everyone is napping except Gwen & Lupin – both are “bright-eyed & bushy-tailed!!”
Is that an old barometer in Panel 7?
It is!! My Nana has one just like it still, even with the green liquid. I want one some day!
Hi!! Ha ha!! The bed on rainy days has gravitational pull!! Priceless!! Pawsome!!
Georgia, you have no idea how much I needed this. Tomorrow we put our Amy to sleep after 18+ wonderful years together. It’s so heartening to see all those other kitties and their human companions living and loving. After the healing I hope to love more kitties again soon.
Oh, Elayne I am so, so sorry. Much love and comfort to you and yours tomorrow and in the days ahead.
I’m so sorry.
Praying for you Elayne.
My biggest sympathies, Elayne. I lost my favorite a while back, (those were -manly- tears!) and probably his brother before the end of this year. I really feel for you.

The last panel is just beautiful! You are amazing.
Aw, Jan, thank you. 🙂
eeee! today was a hard day (my mother’s birthday; she passed over 25 years ago) and i am just catching up. and this, THIS has me all smiles.
thank you georgia, thank you boys, thank you toddler and baby! <3 <3 ,3
This comic needs to be a poster! n__n
I love listening to the sound of rain on the roof; the AC tends to drown it out, though. 🙁 Also, I’ll take the rain, someone else can have the lightening and thunder – doesn’t put me to sleep, makes me antsy about tornados. :S

i feel like we don’t tell you often enough how beautiful your artwork is! The “rain is a symphony” panel is just gorgeous, i love it.
Thank you so much!! 😀
I think this might be the best Breaking Cat News ever. Love it.

I think this is my favourite strip. I’ve had it open all week. 🙂
I concur. This just might be the best BCN yet (single-strip division; the Christmas special wins the multi-strip division).
This is so true. I love napping on rainy days, and the cats use it as an excuse to do the same! 😀
“Sunshine is one note; rain is a symphony.” That’s a pretty great line. Is it from something or did you come up with it?
Thank you for saying! It is one of my own 🙂 It’s something I have said in many a (gentle) debate over sunny days vs rainy days, as the sound of rain itself is one of the things I love the most about it.
… I miss Oregon…
Panel 6 is scientifically sound. And panels 11 and 12 just sound great.
I just stumbled across this site last week and I’ve been “catching up” at every available moment since then!

My calendar arrived today! It’s beautiful 😀
I’m not one for wishing time away… but roll on January so I can put it up 😛
Thank you, Jeni!!!
I just pre-ordered it! 😀 can’t wait to receive it!
Thank you for replying.
These are my cats during all rainstorms!
I’m so glad I shared these in my Facebook feed!! I get notified every once in a while in “On This Day…” and I remember to return to the original panels. Still love them!
