Hello, everyone!! Happy Monday! This pretty much happens in our home no matter how many toys the boys get. They will zero in on one toy, and battle each other all afternoon for it!
Thank you so much to everyone who has bought the book! And thank you for sending me pictures and posts of the book out in the world! Each one that pops up in my social media feeds makes me incredibly happy! I’m delighted people are enjoying it! It’s wonderful to have the comic in print, especially for folks who may not do the computer thing. This has been one of the best things about the book coming out for me, because it means my grandmother is able to finally read my comic! She was born in the 1920s, she’d scold me for revealing her real age so I won’t, (a lady never tells, she’d say!) but simply put, she does not do computers at all. Now each night she and my uncle read one “story” from the book. It’s not easy for me to put into words what that means to me, but pretty much “everything.”
I also want to thank everyone who has been leaving good reviews of the book on Amazon and Goodreads (and in other spots as well!) Thank you so much! That’s something that helps me out a lot. The publisher loves good reviews! (I do too, of course!) I’m trying to make the best showing I can for the first book in the hopes that we can publish more in the future, and believe or not, 5 star reviews on Amazon are something small you can do that could be a big deal! I appreciate each one so much! If you haven’t left one yet, I’d love if you’d consider it!
This weekend Goodreads gave me an author profile! You can find it here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/14532790.Georgia_Dunn If you follow me there, expect many reviews on comics, paperback mysteries, historical non-fiction, and children’s books! I’m learning how the author side of Goodreads works, and I’m going to try and answer some questions there for people.
This has been an amazing week, you have all made me happy and helped a lifelong dream come true! I’ve written thank you here many times, but it will never be enough. I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful, supportive, encouraging community of readers surrounding this comic! ROUND OF HIGH FIVES, EVERYONE! WE DID IT!
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was how short it is! Now I have to leave a note in the copies I bought to give as gifts to go to the website and find September 29, 2014 so they can continue the story (and it’s the report about the Man losing his tail, no less!. 🙂
I pre-ordered a copy of your book and it arrived Saturday. I have been sharing what has been happening with the BCN with my brother, especially since Beatrix’s arrival. When I got my copy of the book on Saturday, he looked at a few pages and immediately went to get it on his Kindle. He was chuckling to himself while he read some of it earlier this evening. Thanks for sharing your talens with us.
It’s funny with toys and felines…with our gang of 8, they seem to specialize. Jasper (black and white) likes to chase a plastic ball with a bell in it all over the first floor–but only after 11PM. On the wood floors, it really scoots along–and you can hear it anywhere in the house…(sadly). 5 of them LOVE catnip toys and bags–we find them hiding everywhere…but a couple of them could care less about toys–they prefer computer mice, stuff on counters and, of course, boxes. They ALL have to experience the adventure in each and every delivery box. Paper grocery bags are fun, too–but only with the handles cut off. What goes through their minds must be amazing!
I have a Jasper, too. He’s black with grey tabby swirls. The jingle balls are his favorite toys, too. He loves to send them bouncing down the basement stairs.
We had Siamese cats when I was a child. One of the was a retriever. My dad was a smoker. When he’d finish a pack of cigarets, he would fold the packet in such a way that it ended up looking a bit like a boomerang. He’d then toss it into the next room. Our male Siamese, Big Bad John, would bat it around for a bit and then bring it back to my dad. When BBJ got tired of the game, he would poke his toy under the furniture. Our ancient, too heavy to move refrigerator died and we had to buy a new one. When the delivery guys finally managed to get the old one out of the kitchen, we discovered that the area under the refrigerator was stuffed almost solid with cat boomerangs!
I’m also noticing your strips may be getting just a bit shorter in length–part of the move towards syndication? And the need to produce more product in condensed timeframe? Either way, they’re awesome! AND we all can hardly wait for book number 2–“Boys Will Be Boys!” The first edition is epic!
Yes! When I make the transition to daily strips (in the future, most likely a year-ish or so?) the strips are going to be in a traditional daily format, with one longer Sunday strip. (There are about 250 strips right now in this format!) I’m doing my best right now to return the web strips to their original shorter length, while web specials will be a little… Well, “special,” ha, and have possibly have longer strips occasionally.
I’m able to get more strips done when they are shorter. The longer strips have been really fun to create, but a scramble to finish and post on time. All of the careful planning and plotting of the comic aside, I think that the longer strips this winter may have also been me dealing with our cross country move. This week I’ve been looking back over the past few months and thinking that. It was a great comfort to spend a little extra time writing stories centering behind the scenes in the studio. Now that Beatrix (in the comic) and I (in real life) are both more settled, it’s time to report the news!
I do mean that, but I want to explain some of what is behind this, because I know hearing something is going to change can feel terrible, and I know you won’t be the only person feeling like this could be bad news. And even if you were the only person feeling that way, I’d still want to try and make you feel better about this.
There are two major reasons why I’m working toward changing the format in the future. Newspapers won’t accept a daily strip that is as large as the current web strips, and I can’t keep up the pace of the current web strips without burning myself out. Right now I write/paint about a page a night to create the two weekly web strips (they’re each about 1-3 pages long). I absolutely love writing these, but it’s been a juggle to keep up. I can give the comic a long life if I shorten the strips in the future to a more manageable work load.
If you just don’t like that three/four panel format, there’s not a lot I can say. However, if you’re worried about the comic changing, I can let everyone know this is something that I’ve been working on since November 2014, with my editor who is a ‘Breaking Cat News’ fan herself. Our biggest goal is to make the transition without losing the comedic timing, little details, character quirks–any element–at all. The folks at my syndicate have given me the time, encouragement, and support to try a lot out and see what works, what doesn’t, and examine why with an aim to keep “Breaking Cat News” itself. There are 250 daily strips so far in the 3-4 panel format. There are more to come. This is not something that’s being decided quickly or thrown together. I write them very similarly to the way the comic is now; I aim for a joke or punchline or some little special something in each panel. Many of the current web strips actually break down into about 4 daily sized strips. Often a story is going to have time to play out over the course of a week, Monday through Saturday.
There’s a difference in print comics and webcomics, and not every fan of webcomics likes print comics and vice versa. I love both. However, I grew up on print comics and this has been my goal since I was a kid–I have to try. I wouldn’t attempt this if it meant that ‘Breaking Cat News’ would be any less funny or fun than it is now. I am gently asking folks to trust me and to wait and see if it really equals bad news. I’m here to knock it out of the park. I don’t know that I can; I’m not going to get cocky and say I can, because I don’t think the result would be any good if I thought that. What I am going to do is try my very best and work hard and get it right.
Well that means you can do about normal-now-size sundays!
plus you will probably get a lot of “Snif’ Wahhhhhh” coments from people who haven’t read your comment.
Whatever you can do for us is greatly appreciated. It is obvious that you can keep the flavor of the strips intact-I look to the example of your serial/specials (like the Christmas serials in the last year, and the Elvis is missing one) which carried a story line over an entire month without missing a joke or little nuance. I can’t speak for the entire Breaking Cat community (and you DO have a community-you built it) but the last thing you should do is burn yourself out, or even worse, begin to dread having to do it. You WILL knock it out of the park, at least for this avid fan. I am just grateful for the lift twice a week, and hope to see it in a newspaper near me soon. You just do what seems right to you, in whatever format, and I suspect that the majority of folks will follow along and love it. Your best if more than enough and I am grateful.
Ouch! Bill Watterson (“Calvin and Hobbes”) wrote of the issues of the usual format. Much of the charm of BCN comes out in the colour, the detail, and the length. Three/four panels of black-and-white will sacrifice that. I hope BCN does not suffer, but I fear it will.
I had some concern/hesitation when I first read about the traditional daily format, but then it sunk in that the strip will be DAILY! Mondays and Thursdays have been the highlight of my week. With this change, your strip will brighten every day of the week!
Thanks for the link to your Goodreads profile; I’ve added you to the authors I follow there. I haven’t received the book I ordered yet. (It’s coming from that huge bookstore based in Portland, and they did not use a tracking number for the shipment.) Rest assured I will read it immediately upon receipt and then give it a glowing review!
Hi, Georgia. This is my first time ever commenting but I couldn’t go on any longer without signing up. My partner & I have been long-time readers and fans. We cherish your boys as if they were ours. Your ability to articulate their authentic feline behavior continues to impress & delight us each time! Thank you for sharing their lives with us!!
This is so TRUE! It doesn’t matter how many toys I purchase, all 8 of my kids want whatever the other ones want! I just let them totally destroy each toy as it comes, and whack each other over the head, etc.
LOVE the book, btw. My sis and I will be sure to leave reviews on Amazon, since that is where we purchased it. We’re looking forward to many more releases from you!
For the same reason that, when you are tying your shoe, the shoelace becomes *the* toy. and when writing or drawing, the pencil becomes *the* toy. and…..
Also, thank you for putting their lives into a book. Congratulations on your success!! Sarah & I are extremely proud of you! We look forward to future comics/books.
Also I really love the panels 4-5. I think I’m so used to seeing the boys in their little shirts and ties. Seeing them behave like, well, CATS, seems like a rare treat 🙂
ROF(with the Boys)LMBO ! Ecstatic for you (and us !) that this book venture is going SOOO Well ! Congrats on the Great Roll-Out and appreciation of all you and your Family and Commercial partners have done to bring BCN to all of us. Your happiness is well-deserved.
:::: laughing helplessly :::: I find this true in my own life! I’ve noticed that any panel with Beatrix in it has a whole different palette and intensity of color from those with the Boys. Is that a nod to Beatrix Potter?
They’re very happy colors. Any strip with Beatrix in it, especially in the bookstore, makes me happy. A friend thought it might be a function of a different location, and on further thought, I realized that the Barn also has its own palette. But the store – and Beatrix – are just breathtaking.
Pucky is so sweet yet so fierce! I bet he is the one you really have to watch, not Elvis!
Love that Lupin is just grinning like a fool while being bitten on the head. He is not to be distracted from that jingle feather fish!
Yup, yup. We have 6 mouse toys, but only one is “best mouse” (aka “mouse mouse”). It’s mostly lost the four felt feet. The others look practically new.
I used to have more than one cat and, they were so much fun. I lost my last
cat a few years back he was 16. So for Christmas 2014 my daughter gave me
a cat. Her name is Bella I love her to death but, I think she should have another cat to interact with. I loved the book and, will leave a review.
Thank you, Pat! I think they do really well with a friend. Elvis was an “only cat” for about two years. He really came into his own once Puck and Lupin arrived. Especially Puck, they are very close in real life.
I was so very happy to get a sunday mail delivery of Breaking Cat News. I had to resist reading through in one sitting and I am going to savor it several pages at a time.
Hi, I’m a new reader! I saw your new book reviewed over on Dear Author and came over to check out the strip. I adore it to bits, and am now regularly following the site. Bought the book in ebook form as well and loved it. 🙂
My household’s a cat household. We’ve only got one cat right now but we used to have two, and boy howdy am I seeing familiar things all over the strip. Love your work!
And hee, cat toys. Our cat George love, love, loves his trickymice. So called because they are SO TRICKY and have a way of getting into the darnedest places. Like under the couch, under the dryer, behind legs of tables and chairs, and into shoes.
My cat has 6 identical rattle mice and only plays with one. So I keep the extras in a drawer so when this one is worn out I can replace it. I know it sounds weird, but this is the only kind of toy she will play with. Except bottle tops. I often wake up sleeping with her mouse and 3 bottle tops.
Lucky you that the boys play together and I suspect the ‘fighting’ for possession is the best part of the fun. With mine, once possession is achieved defines the end of their interest.
Georgia – checked out Amazon and as of 12:30 p.m. EDT you have scored a perfect 5.0. Of course. Amazon thinks I’m Maggy if you want to see how much I love your work.
And I used to spread the word on Facebook for like every strip so at least my small circle of friends got to know you.
Would B&N reviews help as well? I don’t buy from Amazon since they used to sell dog fighting and cock fighting magazines. But I could review you on B&N, if it would help. 🙂
Amazon is way more evil that B&N in my opinion. They have a huge list of offenses. I bought my copy at the University Bookstore. I will give a glowing review to all my friends and tel them they should buy it.
HIGH FIVE!!!! So happy your Grandmother can finally see how talented her Granddaughter is!!!! Thanks for sharing your family with us, we are so blessed by your talent for story telling as well as your artistic talent. I couldn’t wait until Amazon delivered mine so went to B & N last night and bought another one. They only had 3 left!!! Love that you are so interactive with our community family, we feel like a part of your real family. So glad you shared the Good reads link on FB last night, i had never heard of it, but now am following you and have a ton of books that i want to read, i was up ’til after midnight finding books. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Still waiting on Amazon to ship my copies. I ordered in mid March, but they are not even packaging it up until maybe today. It is killing me with anticipation, hearing how everyone is enjoying it :). Darn mega retailers… I will absolutely do a review when it lands here, once I am a “verified purchaser” or whatever the terminology is. The wait will only make it sweeter. I agree with one of the earlier posters- boys will be boys would be a great title for the next in their looonnnngggg series.
Thank you, Martha! I’m sorry it’s taken so long, I don’t know why some of the books have taken so long to get out to people. I hope it gets out there soon!!
Perhaps Martha’s is taking so long because the first edition was already sold out when she ordered? I was very surprised when my package from Amazon arrived right on release day. I bought three: one as a gift, and one to lend out without losing my own copy. Too often I lend out a book and don’t get it back, and my horrible memory means I don’t remember who has it. 🙁
Georgia, I post book reviews on LibraryThing, GoodReads, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com in addition to my LiveJournal blog, and am quite ready to post a 5-star review of your book – as soon as it arrives here, argh!!!! Pre-ordered back in November, yet Amazon is dragging its heels and it’s still not here – I’m hoping for it to come today. Whenever it does, be assured you’ll get more good reviews posted (and, hey, I’m among the Top50 reviewers at the Canadian version of Amazon!)…. Congrats in advance!
That is so like our cats too – we have several things called “Kickeroo” (from Kong, the cat toy maker) which are the perfect size for cats to wrap their paws around and, well, kick – but they all only like the tiger-striped one! That and empty boxes are their favourite toys….
Just posted my review on B&N under my user name, Blue_Reader. I think I’m the only one so far. Check it out! You deserve it. I think you’re actually a comic genius and I know comics. 🙂
Oh yes, Parker (named after the Beth Riesgraf character on Leverage,) throws a ginormous hissy fit if we ever, ever, ever dare to toss a delivery box before she decides whether she wants to keep it. And if she blesses the box with sleeping in it gods help us if we throw it out.
Mine preferred the blue rings to the red! 🙂
Unfortunately one ended up biting off pieces and swallowing them so I had to take the rings away. Had to stop bringing home leftover helium balloons too because he’d eat the ribbons! He (Clueless Morgan) even ruint a -brand-new-never-used- keyboard for me by biting through the insulation on the cable!
We have a hard “no ribbons” rule in the house do to Elvis, who would slurp them up like spaghetti if we let him. Family is continually put off as we stop every gift for Toddler and Baby at the door to throw all the ribbons and bows away, but we’ve got to keep Elvis safe! (And we keep telling them no ribbon, but, alas…)
Easter grass too! We use paper Easter grass, thanks to Elvis.
You could try dunking them all in catnip and see if that erases the differences? Our cats have different tastes in toys, so this isn’t usually a problem for us.
Hi Georgia, I git The Book, the day b4 my knee surgery, it made my day to get it!!! I was like a little girl with her first book to read all on my own. I thank my husband everyday for showing me your comic, have never missed a day!! Meow!!!!
So much love… I pre-ordered 3 copies of the book… One for me. One for a young friend. And one to put aside for future gifting. …pretty sure I’ll need more. Impossible not to appreciate! I literally jumped and squealed with joy upon arrival and make gleeful Lupin faces while showing them off to anyone who enters my home now. It’s so rare to find something that never fails to draw a smile!
I still keep thinking about making a. List of favorite panels and asking about getting a collage style print to frame for the wall. For now, the book s my pride and joy!!!
Thank you again for all your work!
I finally ran out and bought the book, as the mega store will ship in June with o t her books I ordered. This copy was promptly sat upon by Her Imperial Highness, and NO ONE was allowed to read it until she had finished.BCN, of course received the two paw salute, and has been read frequently. The second copy shall go to my brother as a birthday gift.
Strangely enough, a friend of mine had a cat who DID care what color. She brought a blue stretchy lizard home from a trip once, and he dug into her luggage to get to it, sight unseen. She brought a different color home another time, and he was not interested at all, but later went ga-ga over another blue one. Color-blind or not, only the “blue lounge lizards” were interesting, in a “he is evil and I must destroy him” kind of way.
Amazon finally sent my pre-ordered book and it is a delight. I think you chose a great format for the book and it is interesting to see how your drawings have changed over time. One thing does not change. They still crack me up!
Georgia, I am hoping to buy your book but I am not sure what to do with it after I read it. I am so bad about losing or damaging my books, I try to read them and then gift them to someone more responsible. Would you mind if I gave your book to the local public library?
I would not mind at all, in fact that would be a nice honor for me, thank you! I actually am quite the same (I refuse to borrow books from friends now, because I get so anxious that I will scratch them up. I have a terrible habit of bending pages as I read). The Ashaway Free library in RI has several books I’ve donated to them for similar reasons!
Another great strip! Beatrix filling us in on fish facts is hilarious!! By the way, and I’m sure this was on purpose, I noticed in this strip and the last with Beatrix that sometimes her tail doesn’t have stripes. Are they supposed to be fading with age?
*I* think I have 3 very full toy boxes, overflowing with every type of cat toy known to exist.
*They* think there’s only one toy — the one they dig frantically for (scattering toys everywhere) and can never find. Pitiful crying ensues.
When the second kitty had appeared in our house, we used to put their bowls at one place. They had the same food and bowls, but for some reason the second kitty used to stop eating from her bowl and started to eat from the first kitty’s bowl. Then we decided to put their bowls at different places of course. But we still don’t know why she did so =)
Of course we trust you! We also appreciate that this is a lot of work and you have a young family, and we can’t expect you to run yourself into the ground just because we think the current format is nifty. You’re a fabulous cartoonist and will make BCN spectacular whatever the format is. I’m glad you have the space to explore the different ways of doing it, so that it will fit into your life as well as possible. Too many people expect artists to be ridiculously self-sacrificing, and I am all in favour of art being properly respected as a job, and artists being allowed to have a life just as much as they would with other jobs.
Thanks for the additional information, Georgia. I too am a fan of newspaper comics as well as web comics. Many of my favourite newspaper strips also run multi-strip story lines, and I’m sure that BCN can successfully transition to this format. For those who like to see the whole story on one page – this is another good reason to keep buying new BCN books!
Hi Georgia! Yet again, this little vignette of cat behaviour looks very familiar!
I picked up two copies of your book at my local, indy bookstore (Brookline Booksmith) – all they had, and the books hadn’t even made it to the shelf yet! I happily devoured mine and gave the second copy to my niece who is as in love with your comic as I am. Every time I think it can’t get better, you top yourself. In my mind, you’re in the same league as Watterston, Breathed, Thompson… so creative and giving of your talent.
I’m glad to see that Beatrix has transitioned to her new home and responsibilities. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when she and Trevor met one another. You’ve created a truly beautiful friendship there. Best regards, ~ Victoria
Georgia, I posted this on my Facebook page in January. I now know you can relate;
Most people know cats love boxes. So I got my 3 cats 3 boxes which are exactly the same. Upon observing there behavior I developed this algorithm:
Tb- Total number of boxes available
Tc- Total number of cats
NGBCP- Number of Good Boxes from Cats Perspective
Tb + Tc = N
N – ( N-1) = NGBCP
Example- 3 cats and 3 boxes
3 + 3 = 6
6 – ( 6 – 1 ) = 1
Thus from the cats persepctive they will fight over who is going to use the one box and totally ignore the two perfeclty good boxes smile emoticon
Oh, no, Buzzy Mouse has competition for Puck’s affection?? I can just see it in it’s own little fish bowl, with a little mug of water, next to Puck during morning bird watching. no, no, no, Puck is too loyal a friend, he would never dump Buzzy Mouse. Sounds like a Our XI Lives episode, hee hee.
My cats always fight over only one toy. I bought three different toys once they fought over each of them. If one played with one toy, the others wanted to play with that one. I’ve known kids like that too.
I went to Amazon and gave a recommendation. I suggested kids would enjoy it too.
HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY MY BOOK HAS ARRIVED.
YEP I BE DANCING.
as much as i’m tempted to read it all in one sitting, instead i’m limiting mysef to four pages at a time. treating the book as though its a box of the finest chocolates and savoring each page.
as much as i would hate shorter strips i do know that you will contune to include much detail in each panel.
your right we are a community. i’m so happy to be a part of this comminty filled with so many WONDERFUL people from all around the world.
Thank you Georgia: Amazon was kind enough to deliver your book last night. And as there were multiple boxes of stuff, my cats had a field day. Of course the first panel had to be your cats romping through boxes of packing material from a mail delivery. My roommate and I were laughing so hard at it and the scene in front of us, there were tears. Again thank you for your stories. Your most loyal fan!
My cousin just pointed out this comment trail. I totally missed it. Yes, my Siamese loved cigarette wrappers. She preferred them with a twist and would jump after them like a dog going after a Frisbee. I don’t smoke though so would have to ask strangers for their empty packs. They generally assumed I wanted to bum a smoke but would then be very confused when I explained I just wanted the empty pack. The things we do for our cats!
FYI only, I did a five star review on Barnes and noble, under screen name “Tebby” but not posted yet. Been a couple days, hope I did it right. Also FYI only, I did a five star review on Amazon, which posted, but they did not. include the verified purchaser” tag. No big problem, just an FYI for you that things may well be even better than they appear 🙂
Yup. This rings a bell…
Hello, everyone!! Happy Monday! This pretty much happens in our home no matter how many toys the boys get. They will zero in on one toy, and battle each other all afternoon for it!

I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful, supportive, encouraging community of readers surrounding this comic! ROUND OF HIGH FIVES, EVERYONE! WE DID IT!
Can’t wait to join them! Happy Monday xx This works with cats and non-fur babies too!
I am so hoping for the book for my birthday in a couple of weeks, and if not, I’ll go out and get it myself.
I hope you get one for your birthday, Connie!
The only thing I didn’t like about the book was how short it is! Now I have to leave a note in the copies I bought to give as gifts to go to the website and find September 29, 2014 so they can continue the story (and it’s the report about the Man losing his tail, no less!. 🙂
My husband got me an Amazon gift card for my birthday! Getting my copy tomorrow!
Yay!!
I’m so happy to hear that Susan! Thank you!
Squeeeee!!!!!!!!!!! 😀
Oh, I am laughing so hard!!! Puck’s drawn blood for sure!

I have heard of cats doing this! (Paging Denise! Are you reading the comments today, Denise? 😀 )
I got the book Saturday! Reading/savoring a bit at a time, even though I just want to binge-read! It’s beautiful!
Thank you!
“traditional daily format”? Do you mean the three/four panel style? If so, that is bad news for me.
Georgia,
Whatever you can do for us is greatly appreciated.
Martha, this makes me so happy to read. Thank you!
Ouch! Bill Watterson (“Calvin and Hobbes”) wrote of the issues of the usual format. Much of the charm of BCN comes out in the colour, the detail, and the length. Three/four panels of black-and-white will sacrifice that. I hope BCN does not suffer, but I fear it will.
I can understand those fears. I don’t really know what else to say, but I hope you will give it a chance when the time comes.
I had some concern/hesitation when I first read about the traditional daily format, but then it sunk in that the strip will be DAILY! Mondays and Thursdays have been the highlight of my week. With this change, your strip will brighten every day of the week!
That’s one of the biggest reasons I agreed to develop the comic for newspapers! I want it to be daily very much. 🙂
Yay! Thank you, Fritz!
I need to run out and buy some fluffy feather jingle fish, obviously.
Thank you, Melissa! And seriously, why must one toy become “THE” toy?? Ha!
For the same reason that, when you are tying your shoe, the shoelace becomes *the* toy. and when writing or drawing, the pencil becomes *the* toy. and…..
Georgia… “impossible perfection’ yet again!
Also, thank you for putting their lives into a book. Congratulations on your success!! Sarah & I are extremely proud of you! We look forward to future comics/books.
Thank you, Micah!
LOL! FUNNY! Georgia, I still can’t figure out why they fixate on ONE toy… it can be Hilarious!
But Puck, if there’s three of them, how can any of them be ‘singular’ or ‘unique’? (No one tell him there were plenty of them left at the pet store!)
Thank you, Bob!
:::: laughing helplessly :::: I find this true in my own life! I’ve noticed that any panel with Beatrix in it has a whole different palette and intensity of color from those with the Boys. Is that a nod to Beatrix Potter?
It may be subconsciously! I try to give the bookstore a sort of rosy-purple background. 🙂
They’re very happy colors. Any strip with Beatrix in it, especially in the bookstore, makes me happy. A friend thought it might be a function of a different location, and on further thought, I realized that the Barn also has its own palette. But the store – and Beatrix – are just breathtaking.
Is poor Buzzy Mouse going to get jealous?
I can’t speak for him, but I’m hoping he’ll be very happy to have a friend. 😉
Good to see that Beatrix is fulfilling her role as bookstore cat so quickly!
Pucky is so sweet yet so fierce! I bet he is the one you really have to watch, not Elvis!
Love that Lupin is just grinning like a fool while being bitten on the head. He is not to be distracted from that jingle feather fish!
It’s true! Puck is a sweet, sensitive little guy–but he takes zero guff!
The boys fight over toys? I cannot believe it! I thought it was always like the peaceful kingdom in your home, Georgia. 🙂
Ohhhhhhh, no, lol!! Fur flies in our living room sometimes for sure! (Though, for the most part, the boys get along great! We’re very lucky).
Yup, yup. We have 6 mouse toys, but only one is “best mouse” (aka “mouse mouse”). It’s mostly lost the four felt feet. The others look practically new.
High Five!
High five back, Jenna! I think you have seriously been here from the first months at least, if not the very first strip!
I’m guessing that if our cats played with the toys we buy them, this would happen.
So true! What a wonderful, charming strip.
This may be the funniest ever.
I was so very happy to get a sunday mail delivery of Breaking Cat News. I had to resist reading through in one sitting and I am going to savor it several pages at a time.
Thanks Georgia! Still beautifully funny! My Daisy had a toy, it got torn to bits so we got another, exactly the same, it never even got looked at!
Hahaha!!!
Thank you so much, Angela!! Hello!
My pleasure! Glad to be here. 😀
Thank you!!! Your review made me so happy!
And I used to spread the word on Facebook for like every strip so at least my small circle of friends got to know you.
Would B&N reviews help as well? I don’t buy from Amazon since they used to sell dog fighting and cock fighting magazines. But I could review you on B&N, if it would help. 🙂
That would help, Jenna, thank you! Blast, I didn’t know that about Amazon, that’s awful.
And I won’t do B&N; I know too many published writers who refer to it as ‘the evil empire’.
Thank you, Gloria! Isn’t Goodreads fun? My sister (The Intruder) has been on it for years, I only just joined but I already love it!
Thank you so much!!! And ughhhhhhh, on it taking so long! I hope it comes today for you!!!
I so love Puck wrestling Lupin in the final panel. This is so true with cat toys.
That is so like our cats too – we have several things called “Kickeroo” (from Kong, the cat toy maker) which are the perfect size for cats to wrap their paws around and, well, kick – but they all only like the tiger-striped one! That and empty boxes are their favourite toys….
Looking at Lupin’s expression, I think he doesn’t care about the toy so much as the opportunity to tease Pucky and Elvis..
I think they stopped, but I haven’t checked. I like B&N.
Just posted my review on B&N under my user name, Blue_Reader. I think I’m the only one so far. Check it out! You deserve it. I think you’re actually a comic genius and I know comics. 🙂
Thank you, Jenna!! <3
I just read it, Jenna! Thank you so much!!
No matter how fancy ( or expensive ), my cats love milk bottle rings the best !! 😺
Ours too! I have some jokes written down for those in the future!
Meow!!!!
Hi, Mary! Thank you! I hope your knee is healing up well!
You’re welcome, Julie!! I’m happy you like it so much!
Yay!! Thank you, Louise!!
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Alison, thanks so much for mentioning Library Thing, i had no idea it existed. I just signed up, added BCN and gave it 5 stars!
The fishies have such kawaii faces!!! 😆 These are hilarious!!! I show my friend these comic strips and she loves them!
Thank you!!! (I kinda love the fish’s little face 😀 )
This comics needs more ferrets 😀
The flip side of this is humans buy toys in different colors and then wonder why the color-blind cats can’t tell which is which.
I believe I read that many animals (i.e. cats) are only partially color-blind.
Amazon finally sent my pre-ordered book and it is a delight. I think you chose a great format for the book and it is interesting to see how your drawings have changed over time. One thing does not change. They still crack me up!
Thank you, Scott!!
I notice “jingle fish” is listed as a character under the strip. Is jingle fish going to be a permanent character, like buzzy mouse?
It may! 😉
You should do a coloring book!
I’d love to!
See, the fish travel in groups for safety… so the boys have to cut them out of the school one by one to kill and maim and slaughter and pounce them!
this is so accurate it’s scary!! haha
Beatrix looks really excited about her first spot on BCN. I love her Twitter feeds too. You do a good job of capturing her kittenish excitement.
Cats can see colors just fine. They just don’t care.
http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2012/01/both-cats-and-dogs-can-see-color/
Another great strip! Beatrix filling us in on fish facts is hilarious!! By the way, and I’m sure this was on purpose, I noticed in this strip and the last with Beatrix that sometimes her tail doesn’t have stripes. Are they supposed to be fading with age?
Ooooh! Nope–that’s an error! Thank you for catching that, Megan. I will add in Beatrix’s strip sometime before I post the next one!
This is exactly how it works. I don’t bother getting duplicate toys anymore for my two; just two unique ones.
LOL – I managed to hold off for… -two- sittings. 😉 🙂 🙂
*I* think I have 3 very full toy boxes, overflowing with every type of cat toy known to exist.
*They* think there’s only one toy — the one they dig frantically for (scattering toys everywhere) and can never find. Pitiful crying ensues.
Got the book! The box was cut open & the bill of lading missing – but the box was full of only books. LOL!
Oh no!! Haha!! I’m glad the books were there though!
Oh the timeless beauty of a jingle fish ….. is that c.s. Lewis ?
OMG! Haha!!! Lupin’s expression in the last panel! He must be a masochist! :p
When the second kitty had appeared in our house, we used to put their bowls at one place. They had the same food and bowls, but for some reason the second kitty used to stop eating from her bowl and started to eat from the first kitty’s bowl. Then we decided to put their bowls at different places of course. But we still don’t know why she did so =)
Because it was there.
The email is from Beatrix!
Posted my review on Amazon yesterday. Still at a perfect 5! Whoop! Whoop! So great and so deserved.
Thank you!!!
Thank you, Victoria!! <3
Georgia, I posted this on my Facebook page in January. I now know you can relate;
I love this! Thank you for sharing it here, Dr. Joe!
Thank you, Emily!! And Toddler and Baby seem to this already, ha!
Ah, yes, only in my house it was those little fur mice that I carefully examined to make sure they were absolutely identical before I bought them!
Left my five-star review for the book on amazon today, hope to leave many more in the future.
Thank you!!
It came ! It came ! It came! Or, should I say, they came, multiple copies greeted me when I returned home today. Doing my happiest of happy dances.
Great job, Georgia ! The book is even more wonderful than I had expected. Well worth the agonizing wait :).
Did a review on Barnes and noble, will do one on Amazon, too.
Thank you, Martha!!
Thank you, Alexa!
Yay!!! That’s perfect!! 😀
Georgia, Congrats! I was just over at GoComics and you were on the
Popular page!
That is awesome!! Thank you for letting me know!
Georgia…I went to the B&N today and on the very front display were 3 copies of The Book. I was so happy for you!!!!
Thank you, Louise! 😀
Georgia, the ‘Meet Our Reporters’ needs an update. No Beatrix, no Bookstore Lady, no Bookstore logo. 🙁 and no Dog.
Of course, finding the time to do that…could be challenging, I’m sure.
Love the evolution of the strip and its reporters and friends.
You read my mind, Denny! I was thinking the same thing last night while making dinner! I’m going to try and get them up this weekend!
I really want the book for my birthday. If I don’t get it I will go somewhere and get it myself!
Happy birthday in advance!!! I hope it arrives soon!!!
Hi Georgia,
FYI only, I did a five star review on Barnes and noble, under screen name “Tebby” but not posted yet. Been a couple days, hope I did it right. Also FYI only, I did a five star review on Amazon, which posted, but they did not. include the verified purchaser” tag. No big problem, just an FYI for you that things may well be even better than they appear 🙂
Thank you, Martha!!
